The Melbourne Racing Club received a boost in the lead-up to the first Group 1 of 2021 after securing approval to have up to 15,000 people on track for Saturday’s CF Orr Stakes meeting at Caulfield.

Melbourne racing has proceeded with up to 5000 patrons on track in a controlled environment since December last year but the Victorian Government has approved a new COVID-19 plan.

Under the plan, the MRC will divide the Caulfield spectator areas into three zones with up to 5000 people allowed in each zone.

Racegoers will have increased freedom to move around their respective zones.

MRC chief executive Josh Blanksby said racegoers would still enjoy a safe racing experience at Caulfield despite the increased capacity.

“We have loved having members and small crowds back at our racecourses after almost 10 months of racing to no crowds,” Blanksby said. “However, the operating model has been challenging.

“We are confident that from Saturday, the improved experience will balance safety for our guests while allowing them to enjoy a more familiar race day experience.”

Punters will need to pre-purchase their tickets for the CF Orr Stakes meeting while MRC members will also need to pre-register to attend the day.
