OUR resident experts Nathan Exelby and Shayne O’Cass look back at their respective metropolitan meetings on Saturday and give us their assessment of the best and worst performers.

Nathan Exelby (The Courier Mail)

Doomben

BLITZED

Zac Purton rated Kamacite perfectly in front and was able to control the race as more fancied rivals found trouble back in the field.

BACK

Mogador Lost his chance at the start and back in the field wasn’t the place to be at Doomben. Seemingly wants a touch further now and will be suited on the bigger track in a fortnight.

Ecuador is living up to his early potential now and should be hard to beat in the Brisbane Cup after giving weight and a beating to this handy field at Randwick.

Sacred Elixir looks a sure fire Classic horse next season. Stepped up to the tougher grade and powered home. Hard to beat in the J.J.

SACK

Amicus should have been well suited by this weight scale but failed to fire at Doomben. Has had some tough racing and might have had enough now.

Fine Mist had her 1200m limitations exposed here. Was in the right spot but the winner was far too good and she caved in late.

Junoob is still burdened with big weights owing to his good previous record, but he’s not racing at that level anymore. Makes him hard to place.

THE QUOTE

“I just think he didn’t run the trip out.”

— Sam Clipperton on Randwick hotpot Raw Impulse losing his unbeaten Australian tag in the McKell Cup.

THE TALKING POINT

The hot tempo in the Doomben 10,000. Historians were struggling to recall a quicker first section.

Shayne O’Cass (The Daily Telegraph)

Royal Randwick

BLITZED

Ecuador who shouldered a weight carrying record with the 59.5kg to do the Lord Mayors Cup/McKell Cup double. This is the same horse who ran second to Winx in the Epsom too; what a grand campaigner he is for his owners.

BLUNDERED 1

Me for laying Ecuador in the Friday Formline.

BLUNDERED 2

Raw Impulse for finishing 4-lens behind Ecuador at $1,60.

HOT

Jason Attard celebrated his first Saturday Randwick winner with Shalmaneser in the last. Bright and cheerful, you can add astute — that’s the trainer, not the horse.

NOT

Divine Sanction: Goodbye, farewell, as The Doors said ‘This is the End’ my one-paced friend.

HORSES TO FOLLOW

Only need one — Thurston! Wow.
