BEAT THE BOOKIE: VALUE BETS
STABLE WATCH: ROYAL RANDWICK
ANALYSIS: DOOMBEN 10,000
THE EARLY OIL: SANDOWN LAKESIDE
Danny Russell (Herald Sun)
Sandown Lakeside
BANKER
Two options here. Go for the scant term deposit-like interest and quinella the two best hurdlers in the first race — Gingerboy ($1.50) and Arch Fire ($3.50). Or, take a high-risk stockmarket-type punt on Raposo ($12) in race five.
IN THE FRAME
No better jumps trainer in the country at present than Patrick Payne. He won the Grand Annual with No Song No Supper and can win Saturday’s Australian Steeple with Angelology ($3.20).
RISK
Azkadellia in the Doomben 10,000. Big track horse that is being set for the Stradbroke. At $2.80, it’s a sit and watch job. Back her in a fortnight.
JOCKEY (to follow)
Dylan Dunn rode in his first Group 1 last week and continues to grow in confidence. Could spring a couple at odds at Sandown, including the Queen’s horse Bold Sniper, Divine Mr Artie and Lahqa.
TRAINER (to follow)
Shaping as a potentially fruitful day for Robert Smerdon. Great chances in Arch Fire and Spreadeagled. Good chances in Cooldini, Indarra, Fife and Hucknall.
Shayne O’Cass (The Daily Telegraph)
Royal Randwick
BANKER
Divine Sanction (R4 No. 6) — is on a Queensland Derby trail so one would imagine he would nearly have to win this race or be a certainty beaten if his classic aspirations are to be fulfilled. Capable type though — hopefully he gets a fats pace so he can run home from the back.
IN THE FRAME
Hittite (R1 No. 11) — is a superbly bred Redoute’s Choice filly out of an Encosta de Lago daughter of Champion 2YO filly Hasna. Ran on very well on debut over 1250m at Canterbury — imagine how much better she is suited at Randwick over 1400m.
THE RISK
Ecuador (R7 No. 1) — won the Lord Mayors Cup last start (well done) but he’s got barrier 15 and top weight in the McKell Cup this weekend and up against a horse named Raw Impulse who is $15 to win the Caulfield Cup later in the year.
STABLE (on fire): Waller. Seriously, what else am I going to write. The bloke’s won more than Thurston Howell III this season.
JOCKEY (on fire): Tye Angland’s in form right now and has some super rides this weekend, our pick of his two are That’s A Good Idea and backmarker Zedfast.
