Sancy rockets into frame for Magic Millions Classic after debut win

Buyers who shunned the well-bred filly Sancy as a yearling will be ruing their reluctance to bid on the daughter of I Am Invincible who rocketed into contention for the Magic Millions Classic after a brilliant win at Rosehill Gardens.

Buyers who shunned the well-bred filly Sancy at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in January will be ruing their reluctance to bid on the daughter of I Am Invincible who rocketed into contention for the $2m Gold Coast feature after a brilliant debut win at Rosehill Gardens.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly has a million-dollar pedigree but failed to reach her reserve price at auction, passed in when the bidding stopped at $180,000.

“She had a little bit of sesamoiditis, her X-rays weren’t perfect, but like all X-rays at yearling sales some don’t worry them but some you have to be careful about but she was one that it hasn’t effected her, touchwood, ever,” Peter Snowden said.

“She never went shin sore, she has been one hundred per cent sound the whole time we’ve had her. She is just a pleasure to work with. She’s got a good temperament. She is very kind and will do whatever you ask to do.

“She is very professional and always has been from day one. It was to good to see her do everything right today and win like she did. I think there is a good bit of upside to her.

“I didn’t think she’d get this far, to be honest. But she has kept putting her hand up and working well and doing well in the yard and just kept improving.

“I thought that I’d give her a trial and tip her out but she trialled really well and did super afterwards and she’s still carrying a bit of a belly here today so she can only improve from this.’’

Sancy was put into the box seat by jockey Tommy Berry who angled out into clear running at the top of the straight to stake his claim. Sancy loomed large at the 200m, taking over soon after and dug deep to hold off the Chris Waller-trained first starter Centimental with impressive debut winner Hinchbeast close by in third.

“Sancy is really nice filly and pretty much did what she did in her trials,’’ Berry said. “She was very professional in both of those and she did the same thing her today.’’

Such was the manner of Sancy’s win in a small but select race that her Magic Millions TAB Fixed Odds quote was slashed from $51 to $15.

Snowden intends to make his way to the January 11 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) via the Group 3 B. J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on December 28.

Waller was full of praise for well-bred Snitzel miss Centimental who races in the familiar Torryburn Stud colours.

“She is obviously a well-bred filly that was given to us by the Cornish family and they said look after her, there’s no rush, yet she is running before Christmas because of her natural ability,’’ Waller said. “She will go out (for a spell now) and I think she’s top class.’’

The Gold Coast remains a live option for the third-placed Hinchbeast, who went down fighting with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

“He will learn a lot out of that run today than he did when he won,’’ Bowman said.
