Raceday focus: Sandown Hillside tips, odds and race-by-race analysis

A $2.3m colt can repay a little piece of his huge price at Sandown Hillside, while jockey Damian Lane can continue his impressive run of form.

Herald Sun form analyst Brad Waters runs the rule over Wednesday’s eight-race card at Sandown Hillside.

BEST BET

SETANTA (Race 3, No. 2 – $4.60)

A $2.3m yearling, Setanta won well when resuming at Warrnambool but was just unable to reel in the winner last time. Stepping up to 1600m could be the key to the colt cracking it for a city win this time.

NEXT BEST

MISS FIVE HUNDRED (Race 2, No. 6 – $3.20)

Relished the jump to 3000m when bolting in at Cranbourne last time out. She should get the perfect run again at Sandown and can make it two wins on the trot.

KIATA (Race 4, No. 3 – $3.90)

Earned a crack at a city race with her dominant on-pace win at Wangaratta second-up. There’s more depth here but Kiata will be fitter and was only a length from the smart Masked Crusader at her last run at Benchmark 70 level.

GOOD AND PROPER (Race 8, No. 11 – $8.50)

Impressed with the way she finished off when scoring on the Lakeside circuit second-up and she will only be improved for Wednesday’s race. The Shooting To Win mare is promising and can win again.

VALUE BET

LEGEND OF ZORRO (Race 6, No. 5 – $9.50)

The Andrew Noblet-trained Legend Of Zorro is as honest as they come and he fought on well for second last time out. He’ll be fitter for two runs back and rates a great each-way chance that could get out to double-figure odds.

THE JOCKEY

DAMIAN LANE
Cox Plate-winning jockey has a solid book of seven rides and could get off to a flyer with the Danny O’Brien-trained first-starter Grinzinger Knight in the opening race at Sandown.
GRINZINGER KNIGHT (Race 1, No. 4 – $5.50), PARURE (Race 3, No. 6, $8.50), DIAMONDESQUE (Race 4, No. 8 – $7), SAFE PASSAGE (Race 5, No. 7 – $4), FUTURE FORCE (Race 6, No. 16 – $5.50), MURGANELLA (Race 7, No. 6 – $7.50), GALACTUS (Race 8, No. 7 – $5).

THE WEEK AHEAD

A Kilmore day meeting precedes a Pakenham night meeting on Thursday. Warrnambool races during the day on Friday before The Valley hosts the night meeting. Group 1 racing returns to Caulfield on Saturday with the CF Orr Stakes while Yarra Valley will be the scene of the provincial meeting. Ararat and Ballarat race on Sunday.
