OUR experts give you an early shot at finding a winner as they look at the major races around the nation.
Smart New Zealander Volkstok’n’barrell has been heavily supported in early betting to open his spring campaign with a win in the first Group 1 race of the new season, the $400,000 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. The Kiwi star was backed from $16 to $8 in some markets, with the Chris Waller-trained Boban steady at the top of betting at $4.80.
In Sydney, Waller pair Japonisme ($2.40) and Press Statement ($4.60) hold sway in early betting from Godolphin runners Exosphere ($4.40) and Holler ($7) in the feature event at Rosehill, the $175,000 Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m).

ROSEHILL
RAY THOMAS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 1x671
HIS MAJESTY
Race 7, No. 5
Accelerated brilliantly to score first-up at Gosford then might have been a touch unlucky when closing late for second behind Start Wondering at Rosehill two weeks ago. His Majesty has drawn ideally in barrier one and handles soft conditions.
TAB Fixed Odds: $3
NIC ASHMAN (Daily Telegraph). Form: 18615
JAPONISME
Race 5, No. 3
Form is faultless and his ratings continue to increase. Looks better on top of the ground but race fitness is worth plenty in tough going.
TAB Fixed Odds: $2.40
STEPHEN ZAMMIT (Daily Telegraph). Form: 43641
BEYOND THANKFUL
Race 4, No. 1
Chris Waller has got this six-year-old firing on all cylinders at present, including a gutsy win over 1900m at Canterbury in the wet on July 25. Continued on in that vein with a narrow but convincing win over this course and distance on August 15. Loves the wet and will get a great run from the inside barrier.
TAB Fixed Odds: $5
JOHN DAVIS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 67446
INZ’N’OUT
Race 8, No. 8
Made every post a winner and let loose in straight to sprint away and score an emphatic win over this trip and track last time. Looks a more robust type this prep and should send favourite backers home on a winning note.
TAB Fixed Odds: $2.60
SHAYNE O’CASS (The Sportsman/Daily Telegraph). Form: 21456
REDZEL
Race 5, No. 6
Did nothing to speak of first-up though a kinder assessment would be ‘inconclusive’. Was it a ‘sackable run?’. That’s for you to judge, but he has a lot of fans to win back. It’s D-day and then some for this horse on Saturday. But every good horse deserves to be forgiven for a ‘bad’ run, but was he all that bad in the Rosebud?
TAB Fixed Odds: $8.50
DARREN PRENDERGAST (Superracing). Form: x1131
JAPONISME
Race 5, No. 3
Rock-hard fit after four straight wins this prep, highlighted by last-start triumph over strong field that included previously unbeaten Golden Slipper winner Vancouver in the San Domenico Stakes. The one to beat again.
TAB Fixed Odds: $2.40
CAULFIELD
MATT STEWART (Herald Sun). Form: 833x4
KANSAS DAUGHTER
Race 1, No. 7
Huge at Flemington when got going long way out. Freshened and hard to toss.
TAB Fixed Odds: $4.80
ROD NICHOLSON (Herald Sun). Form: 30x14
PRINCE OF BROOKLYN
Race 4, No. 1
Unbeaten in two starts. Won two recent trials and flying on track. Is primed for fresh run and has the talent to win at fair odds.
TAB Fixed Odds: $3.20
DARYL TIMMS (Herald Sun). Form: 6x4114
ALASKAN ROSE
Race 2, No. 4
Well above average in big maiden win on debut and should win again.
TAB Fixed Odds: $2.30
DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun). Form: 49x17
ALASKAN ROSE
Race 2, No. 4
Trainer Mike Moroney rates her the stable’s best three-year-old and she bolted in first-up at Sandown. Looks a major Thousand Guineas player.
TAB Fixed Odds: $2.30
SIMON MOY (Superracing). Form: 171x7
WEARY
Race 8, No. 8
Barrier is a concern here but first-up second behind the ill-fated Burbero in the Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick was solid. ‘Froggy’ Newitt gets on, extra distance looks ideal and, with a bit of cover, expect to be flying late.
TAB Fixed Odds: $9.50
NICK QUINN (TAB). Form: 13111
CHARMED HARMONY
Race 6, No. 2
Smart type aiming for his fourth straight win, in well at the weights after the claim and drawn perfectly in barrier one. Any rain would assist having won four of nine on soft ground.
TAB Fixed Odds: $3
DOOMBEN
NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail). Form: 3x223
FORGOTTEN YEARS
Race 8, No. 9
Has been knocking on the door of a Brisbane Metro win at each of his past three starts and has now seemingly found the right race. Drops 4kg and receives a handy draw, while other fancies draw out. Query is if the track becomes severely rain affected, but proven to a Soft (7) in Queensland and he’s racing better than ever at the moment.
TAB Fixed Odds: $6
BRAD DAVIDSON (Gold Coast Bulletin). Form: 42516
PUNTA NORTE
Race 5, No. 9
Hard to miss his last-start effort when he went right back to second last and then flashed home over 1350m at this track last weekend. Lost 4-5 lengths going back to the rear then and from the good gate he will settle much closer this weekend. Handles all conditions and looks a great each-way bet.
TAB Fixed Odds: $7.50
MORPHETTVILLE
BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser). Form: 31923
CASH IS COMING
Race 7, No. 3
She’s been racing consistently but without much luck in recent starts, including close-up fourth to Counter Spin at Morphettville a fortnight ago. She’s drawn wide but that’s offset by the nine-horse field. Expect her to be charging home for top jockey Jamie Kah.
TAB Fixed Odds: $4.80
LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser). Form: 7346x
REAL MESSI
Race 8, No. 5
Dominant win back in class at Horsham two starts back before a good effort in Melbourne when runner-up behind Temps Velour. Darren Weir places his horses well in Adelaide, the horse has drawn perfectly for Joe Bowditch and looks the testing material.
TAB Fixed Odds: $2.50
