Smart New Zealander Volkstok’n’barrell has been heavily supported in early betting to open his spring campaign with a win in the first Group 1 race of the new season, the $400,000 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. The Kiwi star was backed from $16 to $8 in some markets, with the Chris Waller-trained Boban steady at the top of betting at $4.80.

In Sydney, Waller pair Japonisme ($2.40) and Press Statement ($4.60) hold sway in early betting from Godolphin runners Exosphere ($4.40) and Holler ($7) in the feature event at Rosehill, the $175,000 Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m).

Chris Waller has got this six-year-old firing on all cylinders at present, including a gutsy win over 1900m at Canterbury in the wet on July 25. Continued on in that vein with a narrow but convincing win over this course and distance on August 15. Loves the wet and will get a great run from the inside barrier.

Did nothing to speak of first-up though a kinder assessment would be ‘inconclusive’. Was it a ‘sackable run?’. That’s for you to judge, but he has a lot of fans to win back. It’s D-day and then some for this horse on Saturday. But every good horse deserves to be forgiven for a ‘bad’ run, but was he all that bad in the Rosebud?

Has been knocking on the door of a Brisbane Metro win at each of his past three starts and has now seemingly found the right race. Drops 4kg and receives a handy draw, while other fancies draw out. Query is if the track becomes severely rain affected, but proven to a Soft (7) in Queensland and he’s racing better than ever at the moment.

Hard to miss his last-start effort when he went right back to second last and then flashed home over 1350m at this track last weekend. Lost 4-5 lengths going back to the rear then and from the good gate he will settle much closer this weekend. Handles all conditions and looks a great each-way bet.
