OFF & RACING: Spring Racing Carnival kicks off

OUR experts give you an early shot at finding a winner as they look at the major races around the nation.

Nine runners will contest Sydney’s first group 1 race of the season, the $1m Golden Rose, on Saturday. Godolphin has three starters in the feature race headed by race favourite Exosphere as well as Holler and Shards. Chris Waller’s group 1 winner Press Statement and Gai Waterhouse’s flying filly Speak Fondly will provide stiff opposition. In Melbourne, the group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes takes centre stage. Memsie Stakes winner Boban is the favourite ahead of last year’s Cox Plate runner-up Fawkner.

ROSEHILL

FULL SET OF EXPERTS’ SELECTIONS: ROSEHILL

RAY THOMAS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 67103

NANCY

Race 8, No. 12

Has won two of her four starts and arguably should be unbeaten. There is no doubt she should have won first-up when held up for a run before bursting through late to beat all but Shengli at Canterbury. Admittedly, she is jumping from midweek grade into a tough Saturday-class race but this is a mare of considerable potential and ability. With even luck in running she can win again.

TAB Fixed Odds: $2.50

NIC ASHMAN (Daily Telegraph). Form: 61541

MUSIC MAGNATE

Race 4, No. 4

Awesome first-up against subsequent winner Fell Swoop and looked as though he had some scope for improvement. Doesn’t need any to win this but the fact his trainer says he has, makes him tough to beat here.

TAB Fixed Odds: $2.80

STEPHEN ZAMMIT (Daily Telegraph). Form: 6414x

INZ’N’OUT

Race 4, No. 1

Gerald Ryan has this gelding flying at present, winning his latest two runs in impressive fashion. Dashed clear to win easily at Rosehill on August 29. Drawn nicely in gate five and will be in the firing line throughout. Sure to take a ton of running down.

TAB Fixed Odds: $5.50

JOHN DAVIS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 44612

EXOSPEHERE

Race 6, No. 2

Is too big, too strong for his opposition. It’s not the strongest edition of the Golden Rose and this bloke should stamp his authority as the top three year old in the country.

TAB Fixed Odds: $3

SHAYNE O’CASS (The Sportsman/Daily Telegraph). Form: 14565

BOUNDING

Race 5, No. 1

Times are tough when something goes up odds-on to beat Catkins, who also happens to rate a point higher but has a kilo less. Still, anyone with half an idea would have noted how dominant Bounding was when she won the group 3 at Caulfield first-up. She’s in career-best shape and barrier 4 is perfect for her.

TAB Fixed Odds: $1.90

DARREN PRENDERGAST (Superracing). Form: 13143

MUSIC MAGNATE

Race 4, No. 4

Returned with strong second to Fell Swoop, who headed south to win a stakes race at Moonee Valley last Saturday. Has good record at this distance and will be hard to beat.

TAB Fixed Odds: $2.80

FLEMINGTON

FULL SET OF EXPERTS’ SELECTIONS: FLEMINGTON

ROD NICHOLSON (Herald Sun). Form: x1465

PETITS FILOUS

Race 1, No. 2

Super sprinting filly unbeaten in three starts. Has ideal draw and has been saved for this.

TAB Fixed Odds: $1.85

MICHAEL MANLEY (Herald Sun). Form: 311x1

READY FOR VICTORY

Race 4, No. 2

Quality colt who was unlucky when he resumed as he was held up for a run before charging home for second behind Gold Symphony. Has won down the straight and Damien Oliver goes on.

TAB Fixed Odds: $3.40

DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun). Form: 49x110

PETITS FILOUS

Race 1, No. 2

Ciaron Maher using this as a trial run for the Coolmore Stud Stakes. First time up the straight but if it is to make that grade, should be winning here.

TAB Fixed Odds: $1.85

DARRYL TIMMS (Herald Sun). Form: 1471x

SET SQUARE

Race 9, No. 5

Nicely drawn in race that suits her at this stage of her preparation.

TAB Fixed Odds: $5

SIMON MOY (Superracing). Form: 1x743

READY FOR VICTORY

Race 4, No. 2

No luck first-up when narrowly beaten at Caulfield. Ollie has the sit. Good price and gets a great opportunity to atone here.

TAB Fixed Odds: $3.40

NICK QUINN (TAB). Form: 11115

PETITS FILOUS

Race 1, No. 2

Star filly shooting for her fourth straight career win. Looks a star in the making and the perfect way to virtually double your money on the first race for the day.

TAB Fixed Odds: $1.85

DOOMBEN

FULL SET OF EXPERTS’ SELECTIONS: DOOMBEN

NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail). Form: 22341

SARISARA

Race 6, No. 4

Took on better opposition last prep and notched a stakes placing in super fast time. Has won a trial by a big space and Rex Lipp has found a lovely starting point for her.

TAB Fixed Odds: $2.80

BRAD DAVIDSON (Gold Coast Bulletin). Form: 51611

SONY LEGEND

Race 7, No. 9

Should have finished closer last start and the step back up to 1200m looks ideal for him here. Should box seat from gate one and looks hard to beat.

TAB Fixed Odds: $4

MORPHETTVILLE

FULL SET OF EXPERTS’ SELECTIONS: MORPHETTVILLE

BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser). Form: 19231

ROCKET COMMANDER

Race 3, No. 2

Could scarcely have been more impressive with dominant effort on the Parks circuit last week when she cruised home by more than four lengths. Yet to win on this track from eight attempts but is racing in peak form and should get a perfect trip from barrier four.

TAB Fixed Odds: $3.20

LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser). Form: 46x21

NORTHERN ZHAR

Race 4, No. 2

Smart performer who has won three of seven and missed a place only once at Caulfield at the end of last preparation. Didn’t have a lot go right first-up from a break, draws a good gate here and if he’s going to progress to better races interstate should be winning this.

TAB Fixed Odds: $2
