Flemington
FULL SET OF EXPERTS’ SELECTIONS: FLEMINGTON
THE BANKER: Hardly a revelation tipping punters into a $1.90 shot, but Petits Filous does look a point and steer job for Damien Oliver in the first at Flemington. Use her as an all-up springboard into another fancy later in the program such as Ready for Victory or Boban.
IN THE FRAME: Boban never looks the winner until he’s within spitting distance of the finish line, but his good draw and explosive turn of foot make him the obvious pick in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes — a light on for genuine winning chances.
RISK: Hate to pot a people’s favourite, but suspect comeback galloper Rich Enuff might need one more run until he hits his peak. A big ask to outsprint Group 1 performers Lucky Hussler and Gregers second-up from a long break.
STABLE (ON FIRE): Mike Moroney has struck an early spring purple patch, landing one winner from every five runners. Goes into Flemington’s meeting with a top chance in Yesterday’s Song. Also has double-figure runners in Serenade, Tulsa, War Legend and Garud.
JOCKEY (ON FIRE): Michael Walker is having a field say on the Lindsay Park young stock. Nadawaat and Sovereign Nation fit that category on Saturday. Also rides Well Sprung, Jacquinot Bay, Awesome Rock and Extra Zero.
SHAYNE O’CASS (The Sportsman)
Rosehill
FULL SET OF EXPERTS’ SELECTIONS: ROSEHILL
THE BANKER: Bounding (Race 5, No. 1) is NZ’s one-time champion sprinter and group 1 Railway Stakes winner now over here with Peter and Paul Snowden. She trialled the house down before her booming first-up win the G3 MRC The Heath (1100m) at Caulfield. Odds-on against Catkins, which is a rare occurrence, but she’s dead-set flying.
IN THE FRAME: Laucala (Race 3, No. 14) is a tremendously progressive three-year-old filly from the Chris Waller camp at home with 53kgs and Jim Cassidy to ride. She has taken ‘steps’ at each of her three runs to date and while this is the big test to date, there’s a good race in the daughter of More Than Ready.
THE RISK: Speak Fondly (Race 6, No. 9) is aiming to become only the second filly to win the Golden Rose. Something like 32 fillies have run in the race in the past 10 years for one win and one second, leaving 29 unplaced. Speak Fondly has the advantage that this is a eight-horse Golden Rose and she’s drawn well but she’s got serious competition from those two titanic colts at the top of the order.
JOCKEY (ON FIRE): No one is riding better than Sam Clipperton at present. The former two-time champion apprentice has a superb book of eight rides, including major chances Slivovitz, Peeping, Holler, Boss Lane and The Waco Kid.
TRAINER (ON FIRE): David Vandyke is having a terrific past few weeks, not only in Sydney, but all around NSW. DVD has two runners at Rosehill on Saturday; the in-form Maurus as well as the Commands mare Anyaas, who shouldn’t be taken lightly in her race — she was runner-up in a fillies’ race during The Championships.
BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser)
Morphettville
FULL SET OF EXPERTS’ SELECTIONS: MORPHETTVILLE
THE BANKER: Lord Aspen (Race 6, No. 8). This bloke is one of the most promising gallopers in SA and has a black-type Flemington win to his credit. Hasn’t raced for 10 months but charged to the line when second in a recent trial. The clear class factor and should be too good.
IN CONTENTION: Sistine Spirit (Race 7, No. 9). Talented Victorian who won nicely at Sandown last time. Trainer Andrew Noblet has enjoyed good success recently and this filly gives the impression she’ll really appreciate the 1600m of the feature Morphettville Guineas.
THE RISK: Invincible Heart (Race 1, No. 4). Good wraps on this Mick Price-trained youngster who won nicely at Moe when resuming. This is a big step up in class, though, and she’ll meet very strong opposition from smart filly Viddora.
THE JOCKEY: Paul Gatt’s always among the top handful of riders in SA and he’s started to hit form in recent weeks. He’s got a solid book on Saturday and should find his way to the winner’s circle again.
THE TRAINER: John Hickmott is enjoying a career-best start to the season, sitting second to Phillip Stokes on the Adelaide premiership. He’s only got a couple of runners on Saturday — Classy Jack and Have Plenty — but both have claims.
NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail)
FULL SET OF EXPERTS’ SELECTIONS: DOOMBEN
THE BANKER: Didntcostalot (Doomben, Race 4). Only took a couple of runs to find form for the new stable and beat a superior lot than this with ease last time. Stretches to the 1200m on Saturday, but can’t see that being a problem as he looks set to dominate from the front again.
IN THE FRAME: The Makybe Diva Stakes is quite often a knockout, with five double-figure winners in the past dozen years and only two favourites in that time, including last year. Plenty of depth this time around, so shouldn’t be a race where you’re afraid to play wide in.
THE RISK: Exosphere (Rosehill, Race 6). Dynamic first-up winner, notching monster speed rating and deserved favourite on that, but he has been good to bookmakers a couple of times, with big flops when more was expected. Favourites have a modest record in the Golden Rose, so he looks short enough.
THE JOCKEY: Jeff Lloyd is in the zone at the moment, with a 23 per cent profit on turnover from his past 100 mounts. Doesn’t have any standouts on Saturday, but that hasn’t stopped him adding to his tally in recent weeks.
THE TRAINER: Tony Gollan landed another three winners on Wednesday and has a similarly strong hand at Doomben on Saturday, where Bearskin, Didntcostalot and Notonyourlife are favourites, but the one that may attract even more attention is talented filly Secret Saga in the last. She matched strides with Buffering in a recent jumpout and the trainer is confident he has ironed out her problem of being slowly away at the start.
