Smart New Zealander Volkstok’n’Barrell has been heavily supported in early betting to open his spring campaign with a win in the first Group 1 race of the new season, the $400,000 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday. The Kiwi star was backed from $16 to $8 in some markets, with the Chris Waller-trained Boban steady at the top of betting at $4.80.

In Sydney, Waller pair Japonisme ($2.40) and Press Statement ($4.60) hold sway in early betting from Godolphin runners Exosphere ($4.40) and Holler ($7) in the feature event at Rosehill, the $175,000 Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m).

Saturday meetings: CAULFIELD (9 races, start 12.25pm), ROSEHILL (8 races, start 12.40pm), DOOMBEN (8 races, start 12.48pm), MORPHETTVILLE (8 races, start 1.03pm), BELMONT (9 races, 1.55pm). AEST times.

ROSEHILL

NIC ASHMAN (Daily Telegraph). Form: 67222

SCRATCH ME LUCKY

Race 7, No. 6

Drops 4kg off his last run and doesn’t mind a bit of chop in the ground. His record doesn’t reflect his potential but more that he’s a horse that needs to be in the mood. His current quote is worth a stab.

TAB Fixed Odds: $8.50

STEPHEN ZAMMIT (Daily Telegraph). Form: 13294

AWASITA

Race 6, No. 5

Forced to work hard wide out when a game runner-up behind the smart Miniature over 1100m at Canterbury on a heavy track, then last time out carried plenty of weight when a minor placegetter over this course and distance on August 15. Down 3kg here and is ready to run a big race at double figure odds.

TAB Fixed Odds: $10

JOHN DAVIS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 37506

SCRATCH ME LUCKY

Race 7, No. 6

Hit line with plenty of intent when a close-up fourth over 1350m at this venue last time. Won’t want it too wet underfoot but is honest and should give a great account of himself from the good draw.

TAB Fixed Odds: $9

SHAYNE O’CASS (The Sportsman). Form: 02015

DREAM CHOICE

Race 8, No. 7

Will feel much happier at the 1200m with a restrained tempo given that he is 11 starts 3-2-0 at the trip, and he has figured a few times here at home. He is a heavy track winner and also has the same benchmark rating as strong fancies such as Inz’n’Out, Darciwood and Turbulent Jet.

TAB Fixed Odds: $35

DARREN PRENDERGAST (Superracing). Form: 09x38

TURBULENT JET

Race 8, No. 8

Consistent sprinter has run three seconds from four runs this campaign. Was held up for a run before charging late for second to Countryman at this track last start. Should be thereabouts again with Tye Angland on board.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7.50

If penny has dropped he could blow these away.

TAB Fixed Odds: $10

ROD NICHOLSON (Herald Sun). Form: 78x44

CHARMED HARMONY

Race 6, No. 2

Front-runner who is fit and flying. Has inside gate, 3kg claim and all the favours.

TAB Fixed Odds: $3

DARYL TIMMS (Herald Sun). Form: x2264

MADAM GANGSTER

Race 7, No. 8

Exciting last campaign. Can overcome car park barrier to be in finish.

TAB Fixed Odds: $9

DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun). Form: 41x52

STRATUM STAR

Race 8, No. 17

Drawn well, was impressive first-up and an Australian Guineas placegetter ready to take the next step.

TAB Fixed Odds: $10

SIMON MOY (Superracing). Form: 701x2

EXTRA ZERO

Race 9, No. 2

Old timer who doesn’t win often but who does his best work at this distance range. Track conditions should not be a problem and has the in-form Michael Walker aboard. Cerltainly worth an each-way investment.

TAB Fixed Odds: $11

NICK QUINN (TAB). Form: 48119

MR INDIVIDUAL

Race 4, No. 10

Resumes after an ultra impressive debut win at Bendigo in June and looks an each-way special at double figure odds. Worth a ticket on Saturday and for the Caulfield Guineas.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7.50

DOOMBEN

NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail). Form: 54x12

ALPEN ROSE

Race 2, No. 7

Her run was every bit as good as the favourite Notonyourlife here last time, where she got back and charged late when the race was all over. Up to 1200m no problem and sting out of the ground suits. Drawn to be much closer in the run this time.

TAB Fixed Odds: $6.50

BRAD DAVIDSON (Gold Coast Bulletin). Form: 87324

DUAN OSCAR

Race 7, No. 4

No reason why this horse can’t run a race at massive odds here. The run behind Tibrogargan Miss last time out was much better than it looked and unlike last start where they crawled, he should get the race run to suit here. Jeff Lloyd sticks and at big odds is worth something each-way.

TAB Fixed Odds: $26

MORPHETTVILLE

BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser). Form: 71115

BOLD ZAMOUR

Race 2, No. 2

Ran a terrific race when a strong winner of the Grand National Hurdle at Morphettville last time and there’s no reason he can’t go on with the job here. He’s got plenty of weight but gives the impression he will take it in his stride. Great each-way hope.

TAB Fixed Odds: $10

LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser). Form: 4229x

RIZIZ

Race 3, No. 1

Hard to find a great deal of value on the card but I think Riziz will win again. He was super last week in the Penny Edition, gets in well with the claim for Caitlin Jones (who has won on the horse before) and he should be a touch too classy for rivals.
