Premier trainer Chris Waller, fresh from winning the first group 1 race of the season with Boban in the Memsie Stakes last Saturday, will saddle up a record 11 runners in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick.

The 16-horse field will also contain leading Cox Plate fancies Pornichet and Hartnell. Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist resumes in the Tramway Stakes alongside top class mares First Seal and Lucia Valentina. Godolphin’s major spring player Contributer is the headline runner in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley.

DATO TAN CHIN NAM: ANALYSIS/CLASS SHOULD TELL

EXPERT OPINION: BEST BETS

Saturday meetings: DOOMBEN (8 races, start 12.10pm), MOONEE VALLEY (9 races, start 12.25pm), RANDWICK (8 races, start 12.40pm), MORPHETTVILLE (8 races, start 1.03pm), BELMONT (8 races, 1.34pm). AEST times.

RANDWICK

NIC ASHMAN (Daily Telegraph). Form: 72224

FLAMINGO STAR

Race 7, No. 7

He’s first-up in his second preparation in Australia and we often see these imports improve sharply under these conditions. Will no doubt take further benefit but has drawn perfect and gets ‘Apples’ Bowman to steer.

TAB Fixed Odds: $13

JOHN DAVIS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 75064

RUDY

Race 7, No. 6

Was the find of the autumn carnival, culminating in his narrow fourth in Kermadec’s Doncaster Mile. Boasts an envious second-up record and if the heavens open, this bloke sprouts web hoofs.

TAB Fixed Odds: $18

SHAYNE O’CASS (The Sportsman/Daily Telegraph). Form: 20154

FLAMINGO STAR

Race 7, No. 7

This is my Epsom horse. Has trialled twice for his return and went super each time. The big problem is he has yet to run a place in five first-up runs. But to be fair, he is with a different trainer now and in his only first-up run for Chris Waller he was 4.8-lengths off a 5-time group 1 winner in a group 1 race, so we have to take that first-up stat with a grain of salt.

TAB Fixed Odds: $13

DARREN PRENDERGAST (Superracing). Form: 9x383

SWEYNESSE

Race 7, No. 8

Quality four-year-old has great first-up record, notching two wins and an eye-catching second to Hallowed Crown over this trip on his return in the autumn. Has trialled twice leading into this and will be charging home at good odds.

TAB Fixed Odds: $12

CHELMSFORD STAKES: PERFECT FOR PORNICHET

MOONEE VALLEY

MATT STEWART (Herald Sun). Form: 05x23

LAZUMBA

Race 5, No. 7

Looks a spring player in the making two runs at first prep. Might prove best horse to come out of this race.

TAB Fixed Odds: $13

ROD NICHOLSON (Herald Sun). Form: 8x441

FLAMBERGE

Race 8, No. 2

Group 1 Goodwood winner resuming. Goes super fresh, working well and great each-way value.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7

MICHAEL MANLEY (Herald Sun). Form: 3477x

STRONG HAND

Race 3, No. 4

Made it four wins on end when wore down Leveraction to win over 1600m here last start. Improving with every start and should get a great run on the speed again. $3.60 looks nice value.

TAB Fixed Odds: $3.60

DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun). Form: 1x523

KENTUCKY FLYER

Race 1, No. 2

First start at the Valley and in town, but suspect the form line out of its last-start Pakenham win will hold up in a shallow race.

TAB Fixed Odds: $4.80

SIMON MOY (Superracing). Form: 01x25

DIBAYANI

Race 7, No. 7

Huge effort in P.B. Lawrence Stakes when solid third after being wide behind pair he meets again at the Valley. Sure to be fitter and handled tricky circuit with ease in trial this week. Good gate and great odds.

TAB Fixed Odds: $15

NICK QUINN (TAB). Form: 81197

KURO

Race 8, No. 4

Favourite Chautauqua looks vulnerable with Kuro looking an each-way special. First start with the Freedman stable and has won two of three previous first-up runs.

TAB Fixed Odds: $6.50

Kuro will make his debut for the Lee Freedman stable on Saturday. Picture: Michael Klein

DOOMBEN

NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail). Form: 4x125

TERONADO

Race 7, No. 5

Warmed up OK late when resuming in a hot Class 6 Plate in pleasing return from lengthy break. Always improves second up and out to 1350m in a sub-par Open Handicap suits.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7.50

BRAD DAVIDSON (Gold Coast Bulletin). Form: 73248

STATE OF WEALTH

Race 1, No. 2

Had no peace in front first-up when holding on solidly for fourth in a much stronger race. He wasn’t far behind Didntcostalot that day who has come out since and bolted in at Doomben last weekend. Should get across from barrier eight and he certainly looks over the odds and $15 is still available with the corporates.

TAB Fixed Odds: $13

MORPHETTVILLE

BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser). Form: 11153

CON’S GOLD

Race 5, No. 4

Should have gained plenty of benefit from solid first-up effort when third to A Saucy Snitzel on this track. Excellent second-up record makes him a great each-way bet with leading jockey Jamie Kah in the saddle.

TAB Fixed Odds: $11

LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser). Form: 229x1

SOURCE CODE

Race 7, No. 3

Victorian raider who hasn’t raced since March but is a winner first-up and comes off a good Cranbourne trial behind Sinhala. The $7 looks super each-way value here in a very even race.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7

GODOLPHIN: MUSKETS AT DAWN

GODOLPHIN: BIG GUNS ON THE GROUND
