Nine runners will contest Sydney’s first group 1 race of the season, the $1m Golden Rose, on Saturday. Godolphin has three starters in the feature race headed by race favourite Exosphere as well as Holler and Shards. Chris Waller’s group 1 winner Press Statement and Gai Waterhouse’s flying filly Speak Fondly will provide stiff opposition. In Melbourne, the group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes takes centre stage. Memsie Stakes winner Boban is the favourite ahead of last year’s Cox Plate runner-up Fawkner.

HOT TIPS: WEEKEND BEST BETS

ROSEHILL

NIC ASHMAN (Daily Telegraph). Form: 22240

CATKINS

Race 5, No. 2

It’s a two-horse race between her and Bounding and the gap in the market is greater than it should be. She’ll be outside of Bounding in the run, which is a good place to be this week. Back her and save on Bounding if you want to play it safe. The market says they’re a 75 per cent chance of winning but I’ev got it more around the 90 per cent — a tasty 15 per cent of overs.

TAB Fixed Odds: $3.80

STEPHEN ZAMMIT (Daily Telegraph). Form: 2945x

HEART TESTA

Race 7, No. 6

Returned from a spell with a game 4th over 1200m at Randwick on August 22. Will strip much fitter now, has a great second-up record and scored at his only attempt at this distance. Looks real value at the double figure odds on offer.

TAB Fixed Odds: $12

JOHN DAVIS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 50643

NANCY

Race 8, No. 12

Really savaged the line at Canterbury over the six furlong trip last time and the move to 1400m seems a logical step, as she plummets in weight here.

TAB Fixed Odds: $2.50

SHAYNE O’CASS (The Sportsman/Daily Telegraph). Form: 01540

LAUCALA

Race 3, No. 14

A three-year-old filly taking on older mares but I am not sure there’s a more progressive filly in the Chris Waller camp at present than her. She was mighty on debut at Canterbury over 1200m then stretched her stablemate Wudang Mountain to the max at Warwick Farm after that before returning to Canterbury to win a 1550m maiden in her trademark barnstorming fashion. J Cassidy and 53kgs at home.

TAB Fixed Odds: $9

DARREN PRENDERGAST (Superracing). Form: x3839

SKYLINE BLUSH

Race 2, No. 7

Anthony Cummings has got this mare flying, reeling off three straight wins. While Silverball is clearly the horse to beat, this mare is rock-hard fit and looks good each-way value.

TAB Fixed Odds: $9.50

NICK QUINN (TAB) Form: 11978

GOLD SYMPHONY

Race 6, No. 3

Could not have been more impressive winning the Vain and McNeil Stakes and the bookies clearly are not respecting the Victorian form. Drawn perfectly in barrier one with Tommy Berry taking the ride.

TAB Fixed Odds: $18

FLEMINGTON

Michael Manley says the distance looks perform for Oaks winner Set Square. Picture: Colleen Petch

ROD NICHOLSON (Herald Sun). Form: x4412

NOBLE PROTECTOR

Race 8, No. 6

Smart enough for the 1400m first-up. Working well, trialled well.

TAB Fixed Odds: $3.70

MICHAEL MANLEY (Herald Sun). Form: 477x0

SET SQUARE

Race 9, No. 5

Star mare who resumed with top run at Caulfield when ran home strongly with big weight when just beaten by a smart horse. Step up to 1700m looks ideal.

TAB Fixed Odds: $5

DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun). Form: x5231

BOBAN

Race 7, No. 3

Impossible not to keep coming back to the old warrior in a Group 1 weight-for-age race that looks light on genuine winning chances. Just needs to settle to use its sizzling turn of foot.

TAB Fixed Odds: $4.40

DARRYL TIMMS (Herald Sun). Form: 2641x

PRIZUM

Race 2, No. 10

Ultra consistent in recent outings and unlucky not to have won past two. Likes this track.

TAB Fixed Odds: $9

SIMON MOY (Superracing). Form: 1x253

DIAMETRIC

Race 9, No. 9

Absolute horror draw but if can manage to find decent position with some cover has the ability to be right in this. Drops back in distance but racing well.

TAB Fixed Odds: $13

DOOMBEN

NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail). Form: x1253

GID UP STROP

Race 7, No. 13

Talented miler, so he’s better suited over further, but finds a winnable race first up and this is far easier than what he was taking on last prep.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7

BRAD DAVIDSON (Gold Coast Bulletin). Form: 32480

LILLY THE FILLY

Race 6 No. 12

Was doing her best work late over the 1050m last start and they should go like last week’s pay here giving this filly her chance to wind up late. No good thing by any means but at $21 (UBET) she is worth a small wager each-way.

TAB Fixed Odds: $15

MORPHETTVILLE

BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser). Form: 11534

SPARTAN WARRIOR

Race 5, No 10

Former Victorian who ran a solid race first-up for the Grant Young stable, beaten less than two lengths by Bullpit. This is a step up in class but should get a good trip from barrier one. Expect him to camp off them and get to the home well.

TAB Fixed Odds: $18

LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser). Form: 229x1

I AM GYPSY

Race 5, No. 9

Handy mare on her day and she has been placed at two of four first-up outings.

Had form in much better races, has good early speed and the perfect barrier.

Looks value.
