OFF & RACING: Big contenders for Saturday's Cox Plate

OUR experts try to boost your bank balance with the best value bets of the weekend in the major cards around the nation.

Saturday meetings: MOONEE VALLEY (10 races, start 12.40pm), RANDWICK (9 races, start 12.55pm), DOOMBEN (8 races, start 1.42pm), MORPHETTVILLE (8 races, start 1.57pm), ASCOT (8 races, 3.55pm). AEDT times.

MOONEE VALLEY (Saturday)

ROD NICHOLSON (Herald Sun). Form: 33626

PASADENA GIRL

Race 7, No. 10

Wasn’t put into the Thousand Guineas by jockey last start. Gets to best distance and is each-way value in this.

TAB Fixed Odds: $4.40

MICHAEL MANLEY (Herald Sun). Form: 60629

THE UNITED STATES

Race 6 No. 7

Crying out for 2500m. Not suited by slow tempo but still finished on well at his last start over 2040m here. $4.20 looks appealing odds.

TAB Fixed Odds: $4.20

DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun). Form: 46160

AROD

Race 9, No. 8

Hard to believe this guy is almost twice the price of Highland Reel. A second to Solow is superb form. Could deliver Craig Williams Cox Plate No. 3.

TAB Fixed Odds: $9.50

DARYL TIMMS (Herald Sun). Form: 86821

PRECEDENCE

Race 6, No. 1

Got home nicely and needs to win this to bolster claims for Melbourne Cup run.

TAB Fixed Odds: $15

SIMON MOY (Superracing). Form: 93073

CRITERION

Race 9, No. 1

Exceptional performance first-up when victorious in the Caulfield Stakes. David Hayes said pre-race whatever he produced that day he would surpass on Cox Plate Day. Enough said.

TAB Fixed Odds: $6

CHRIS VERNUCCIO (Superracing) Form: 020

JAMEKA

Race 7, No. 11

The three-year-old fillies have the edge over the boys (Press Statement excluded) as proved by Sacred Eye’s win last week. Jameka was impressive in the Thousand Guineas to finish second, running faster sectionals than Pasadena Girl and Sagaronne.

TAB fixed odds: $4.60

DARREN PRENDERGAST (Superracing). Form: 78400

CRITERION

Race 9, No. 1

He has proved to be a weight-for-age star under the guidance of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, winning the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Caulfield Stakes either side of a commendable European campaign. Form out of the Caulfield Stakes was franked by Mongolian Khan’s win in the Caulfield Cup. Top chance.

TAB Fixed Odds: $6

MOONEE VALLEY (Friday night)

NICK QUINN (TAB) Form: 03046

BUFFERING

Race 7, No. 1

Chautaqua obviously hard to beat, but Buffering will be bowling along in front and showed last start in the Moir Stakes he is back to his brilliant best.

Can’t go wrong on an each-way basis.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7

RANDWICK

NIC ASHMAN (Daily Telegraph). Form: 65x09

CARTIER ROCK

Race 6, No. 5

Handles the wet and has won at Randwick before. Looks well suited up to 1400m.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7

STEPHEN ZAMMIT (Daily Telegraph). Form: 36008

SCHERZOSO

Race 8, No. 10

Had excuses when unplaced at Rosehill on September 26, then charged home to just fail over 2000m at Randwick last time out. Tony McEvoy will have him right at his peak now and the wet track will prove beneficial. Sure to be backed on raceday.

TAB Fixed Odds: $4.40

JOHN DAVIS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 435x0

UNKNOWN DESTINY

Race 5, No. 8

Is resuming but has contested both the Sires Produce and Champagne Stakes (Group 1s) of 2014 at this venue. Placed twice from two preparations fresh and Sam Clipperton engagement is a positive sign.

TAB Fixed Odds: $8

OFF & RACING: Big contenders for Saturday's Cox Plate

DOOMBEN

NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail). Form: 97341

GLORIOUS RED

Race 8, No. 13

Wasn’t much between her and Col ‘N’ Lil through the winter and don’t think the market should be as far apart as it is at the moment. First up effort was good getting to the line late and the mile looks her ideal trip. Will get a soft run and Glen Colless should be able to produce her at the right time.

TAB Fixed Odds: $7

BRAD DAVIDSON (Gold Coast Bulletin). Form: 0659x

CRACCO

Race 8, No. 1

It’s been 616 days since Cracco last won a race but he rarely runs a bad race. He just got too far back last start over 1350m and from the good gate should box seat here and prove hard to get past. He has been in the top three at all three runs at the mile and 12 of 16 starts at this track. Have something small on for the win but back him mainly the place.

TAB Fixed Odds: $12

MORPHETTVILLE

BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser). Form: 21126

SURGING WAVE

Morphettville, Race 4, No. 6

Wasn’t far off them at Benalla last time at first start since July. Looks well placed in this line-up and the Hayes-Dabernig stable is in white-hot form. Looks terrifice value at good each-way odds.

TAB Fixed Odds: $4.80

LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser). Form: 41258

SURGING WAVE

Race 4, No. 6

The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig team are flying and this looks the horse to bring their winning ways to Adelaide. This isn’t a strong race and the $6 in early UBET markets looks enticing.

TAB Fixed Odds: $4.80
