Uber has crashed at Flemington, forcing thousands of punters to find an alternative route home.

Officials have announced at the track that due to a technical fault, the ride-sharing service is out of action.

"Due to a technical fault, the Uber app is not operating this afternoon," a message to punters read on screens at the track. "Please seek alternative transport from the venue."

Uber said that the issue was with the technology it had employed in the pick-up zones at Flemington, which were closed before the last race with punters instead advised to utilise public transport.

“Our priority is transporting people safely and conveniently," an Uber spokesperson said.

"We rigorously test all our special event technology, but unfortunately on this occasion technical issues have meant that we are currently unable to connect all drivers and riders at the dedicated Uber zones within the Flemington racecourse. For that reason we have made the decision to close these zones while we work on a solution.

“We appreciate this has been frustrating for many of our valued riders and driver-partners, and we apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.”

It's a tough end to the day for a huge crowd that cheered home Vow and Declare, Australia's first Melbourne Cup winner in four years.
