SUNDAY night saw the connections of Hokko Brave come together and reach the consensus that luck will be their best friend as they look to steal the Melbourne Cup from fellow Japanese hope and hot favourite Fame Game.

Jockey Craig Williams says jumping from barrier 20 will do him no favours, with trainer Yasutoshi Matsunaga and connections preparing to cross their fingers and hope for the best.

“We had a meeting … they’re under no illusions,” Williams said.

“We haven’t got the best horse in the race, but he’s going to need the best ride from that barrier for him to be competitive. On his day, we know how good he can be.

“It’s put me and the horse under huge pressure and it was quite interesting last night to see Mr Yabe (owner Koichi Yabe) out here and a few of the families have arranged for Hokko Brave to be here … they’re just so thrilled to be here and be a part of the biggest race in Australia.”

This time last year, Williams found himself without a Melbourne Cup ride after Cavalryman was scratched on the morning of the race, so he admits he is “in a much better position” already.

Hokko Brave couldn’t be healthier, he says, and will be looking to position itself within the crowd of 24 early in the piece.

“I know where I’d like to settle him, but from barrier 20, that changes everything,” the hoop told RSN.

“The plan is from the stable is that he goes back and rides for luck for most of the race.

“They can’t get a healthier horse and we just have to navigate with a bit of help from the barrier.”
