Jockey Jamie Kah’s charge towards history took in yet another milestone when she steered powerhouse sprinter Nature Strip to victory in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington.
Kah became the first woman to ride a Lightning Stakes winner when she got the best out of Nature Strip in the $750,000 contest.
But Group 1 success at Flemington is nothing new for Kah. She won the Australian Cup and Makybe Diva Stakes in 2019 in the early stages of her rise through the Melbourne riding ranks.

Kah rides against world class opposition, including premiership winners Craig Williams and Damien Oliver, every week. But she has built a 21-win lead in this season’s Melbourne jockeys’ premiership.
Nature Strip completed yet another winning treble for Kah at Flemington after also winning on Quantum Mechanic and Zou Dancer.
Her day’s work earned her more than $30,000 in her percentage of prizemoney from wins. Jockeys also get paid a riding fee.
However, she had one regret — her parents were unable to attend because of Melbourne’s latest COVID-19 lockdown.
“I wish Mum and Dad could be here today. It would have been awesome,” Kah said after Nature Strip’s Lightning Stakes win.
“They had a table (booked) by the winning post and they would have been there cheering me on. I’m a bit emotional. That was amazing.”
But Kah’s parents John and Karen, who were both Olympic speed skaters themselves, will have plenty of chances to watch their daughter make history in the coming months.
Kah is on the brink of becoming the first woman to win the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership and is also on target to break a longstanding riding record.

You deserve that one, @jamieleekah07. pic.twitter.com/KU5tQoMv3h
Kah has more than five months to ride the 40 winners she needs to break Brett Prebble’s record of 99 ½ winners set in the 1999/00 season.
Prebble expects Kah to break his record, describing such an achievement as a fitting reward for her talent and work ethic.
“I’d be very happy for her because Jamie has worked so hard in Melbourne after doing her time in Adelaide,” Prebble told the Herald-Sun last month. “She’s a great rider and she’d definitely deserve it.”
Punters and a new generation of young girls looking to follow in Kah’s footsteps would agree.
