Three winners last week. Chris Vernuccio flew the flag in the face of adversity on The Valley slush with the day’s ‘good thing’ Tailleur ($1.60) saluting before the meeting was abandoned, while his value bet was simply a stunning performance by Verry Elleegant ($7.50) at Randwick. Matt Jones also hit the bullseye with his value bet, Roheryn ($4.40).
Spring is on our doorstep and our experts are chopping at the bit to make amends for last week’s disappointing return, although a couple of our top picks were scratched.
The meetings: EAGLE FARM (9 races, start 11.38am), MORPHETTVILLE (9 races, 1.01pm), ROSEHILL (9 races, 12.05pm), CAULFIELD (10 races, 11.45am), BELMONT (8 races, 3.51pm).
ROSEHILL GARDENS
RAY THOMAS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 311s0
MUGATOO (Race 8, No. 3 — $2.25)
Mugatoo is a gifted galloper set to make his mark during the spring carnival. He resumed with a brilliant win in the Winter Challenge a month ago, unleashing an impressive burst of acceleration in the straight. If he avoids bad luck in running he is clearly the one to beat.
Value bet: MERLINITE (Race 4, No. 9 — $26)
MATT JONES (Daily Telegraph). Form: 11510
PELTZER (Race 5, No. 5 — $3.80)
This horse can skip clear and stay undefeated in the main race on the card as he heads towards a Golden Rose. The trial form has been good and he was dominant the last time we saw him as a two-year-old.
Value bet: SAFADO (Race 9, No. 16 — $18)
CHRIS VERNUCCIO (NewsRacing). Form: 12661
MUGATOO (Race 8, No. 3 – $2.25)
The lightly-raced stayer has untapped potential and should have a superior turn of foot if the race isn’t run at a ridiculous speed.
Value bet: BEHEMOTH (Caulfield Race 9, No. 7 — $4)
NICK QUINN (TAB). Form: 14111
MUGATOO (Race 8, No. 3 — $2.25)
Since coming to Australia he has won four of his six starts and is worth sticking with as he races through the grades.
He should be primed to win again on the back of a sharp trial win at Gosford last week.
Value bet: IMMORAL LOVE (Caul Race 7, No. 10 — $7)
LATEST BETTING: TAB FIXED ODDS
CAULFIELD
GLENN McFARLANE (Herald Sun). Form: 15662
RUBISAKI (Race 10, No. 1 — $2.70)
Classy mare who has an extraordinary winning record and can add to that picket fence again here.
Value bet: SAVATIANO (Race 9, No. 13 — $5)
GILBERT GARDINER (Herald Sun). Form: 43666
RUBISAKI (Race 10, No. 1 — $2.70)
Drawn out but only needs to be a length or three off them to unleash her explosive turn of hoof.
Value bet: REGAL POWER (Race 9, No. 1 — $17)
SIMON MOY (NewsRacing). Form: 15194
RUBISAKI (Race 10, No. 1 — $2.70)
Will get back but, if the track is favouring horses running on, should be able to add to the picket fence.
Value bet: MYSTIC JOURNEY (Race 9, No. 11 — $9.50)
LATEST BETTING: TAB FIXED ODDS
EAGLE FARM
NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail). Form: 12212
WOMAN OF GOLD (Race 4, No. 14 — $4.20)
Was heavily backed up to 1400m last time, but just found the in-form Edmonds runner too good. Now reverts back to 1200m in what looks like being a strongly run race. She should get her chance to run on from the back.
Value bet: KAONIC (Race 9, No. 3 —$7.50)
LATEST BETTING: TAB FIXED ODDS
