RECKON you've got your Melbourne Cup tips down to an exact science? Trust us, you've got nothing on the brains trust at Macquarie Bank.
Macquarie Research has used a raft of factors and data to predict the order in which this year's field will finish, with British raider Sea Moon a clear favourite ahead of Dandino and Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner.
They use factors including 'sentiment' (the latest odds before publication), 'momentum' (movement of the odds over the past month), 'yield' (each horse's average prizemoney per race), 'hit rate' (overall winning percentage and also form over last five races), and also takes into account barrier position, age and whether it is their first Melbourne Cup.
Macquarie says that to make money from its formula, punters should bet both on their top-ranked horse, and also take their top six in a box trifecta.
Using this method, they've successfully picked the trifecta in 2007 and 2010 and the winner in 2009 (Shocking) and 2011 (Dunaden),
Think it's all witchcraft? Consider this: if you'd followed the Macquarie formula since 2007 (and their suggested $1000 investment every year) you'd have turned your cash into $12,000 by now.
