Melbourne Cup 2018: Cross Counter wins the race

ONE lucky punter has turned an opportunistic $10 bet into $76,440 with Cross Counter saluting in the Melbourne Cup.

In a win for the battlers, the punter placed a three-leg multi with TAB over three months back at a price of $7644 across two sports.

The first market to deliver was American golfer Brooks Koepka who claimed golf’s 2018 US PGA Championship with a two stroke victory over Tiger Woods at the hefty price of $26.

Second up was Caulfield Guineas winner The Autumn Sun, with the superstar colt dominating the feature race by 4.5 lengths as an odds on favourite.

Fortunately, the savvy punter took the enormous price of $14 when placing the bet.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter was the final piece of the puzzle who entered the race on the third line of betting at $9.

Again the punter was well ahead of the market, taking $26 for the Godolphin three-year-old at the time of placing the bet.

The northern hemisphere stayer looked an outsider to salute after settling near last early in the race, before gun hoop Kerrin McEvoy steered the gelding to a memorable victory at Flemington.

Incredibly, the bet was outdone by another astute TAB punter who turned $3 into $114,000 by correctly selecting the first four horses past the post in exact order.

The dividend was $38,020, which was secured three times for the monumental collect.

Another notable winner from the Cup was the confident punter who whacked $50,000 on Cross Counter to win at $10 for a collect of half-a-million dollars.

Not to be shrugged at, another gambler had $800 on Manikato Stakes winner Brave Smash into Cross Counter to win the Cup at $127.50 for a collect of $102,000.

As for the toughest losses, one punter put his faith in favourite Yucatan (unplaced) with a $100,000 each-way bet at $6/$2.25.

Let’s also spare a thought for the following hard luck story to come out of the great race.

One luckless punter placed a $100 multi at $630 to win $63,000 on Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Enable, into the Everest winner Redzel, into Marmelo (second) to win the Melbourne Cup.
