Jockey Brodie Loy aims to return from injury next week and he’s never been more inspired to succeed following the events of recent weeks.
Loy has been out of action for close to six weeks after suffering internal bleeding when a trackwork incident resulted in a horse rearing and landing on top of him at Warwick Farm.
“There was a horse loose and we were waiting. It was one of those incidents when I pre-empted the horse was going to do something and I took my feet out of the irons,” Loy said. “Then as this was all happening it just flipped over on me.
“I came out of it with a massive haematoma in my back, burst a fair few of the blood vessels in my pelvis and some serious muscle damage at the bottom of my spine.
“The initial diagnosis was I’d be out until January but I’ve healed up well and had my first morning back at the track this morning.”
Loy plans to return on Saturday week at Gosford riding at 57kg. He says he shouldn’t take too long to get his riding weight down to his normal riding weight of 55kg.
Loy expressed disappointment at missing potential opportunities over the spring carnival due to Sydney’s leading jockeys heading to Melbourne post Epsom Handicap day but also said the achievements of jockeys like Koby Jennings were inspirational.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back,” he said. “Watching Koby win the Golden Eagle was really inspiring.
“I’m pretty good mates with Regan (Bayliss). We started off our careers together so to see him winning a race like the Golden Gift last Saturday was also great to see, no different to someone like Jye (McNeil) winning the Melbourne Cup.
“This sport is all about opportunities and when they come your way making the most of them.
“You see these younger jockeys getting the chance and making the most of it is very inspirational for someone like myself.”
