Big punters get in early to back Winx to bow out a winner in Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Winx’s farewell race isn’t for another two weeks but this hasn’t stopped some punters placing huge bets on the champion mare to retire a winner.

Sydney’s super mare is chasing her 33rd consecutive win in the $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on April 13 before she is retired to stud.

QE STAKES BETTING: TAB FIXED ODDS

TAB Fixed Odds have been operating on the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and have Winx at $1.10 for a triumphant end to her racing career.

Despite there being 14 days until the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the short odds being offered for Winx, this hasn’t stopped one punter from placing two bets on the great mare of $150,000 each at $1.10.

Another TAB punter has also made an early move with a wager of $132,000 at $1.10 on Winx to win again. She is now $1.08 with TAB.

The early punters are taking an even bigger risk because they are making their investments before the final fiald is declared. If Winx does not accept, for whatever reason, these punters will do their money cold.

“It is unusual for punters to be betting in such big amounts when it’s an all-in market and there’s still two weeks to the race but obviously they are anticipating Winx will start much shorter on raceday,’’ TAB’s Gerard Middleton said. “They are happy to get set at $1.10 now knowing that Winx won her last start in the George Ryder Stakes at $1.05.’’

The TAB took its biggest ever wager on Winx of $345,000 before her win in the George Ryder Stakes last weekend and betting interest will ramp up again before her final race.

Meanwhile, the Golden Slipper Carnival finishes at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with another two Group 1 races, the $1.5 million Kia Tancred Stakes (2400m) and the $500,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (1500m).

The favourites for these races, Avilius (Tancred) and Verry Elleegant (Vinery) are the two best-backed runners at the Rosehill meeting.

A TAB Fixed Odds punter has had $130,000 at $1.65 on Avilius to win the Tancred and stands to make a potential profit of $84,500. Avilius is now the $1.60 favourite and accounts for nearly 90 per cent of the win hold on the Tancred.

Verry Elleegant has been heavily backed to win the Vinery Stud Stakes, firming from $3.50-$2.40 after a series of sizeable wagers, including $2,500 at $3.40, $1,400 at $3.40, $1,500 at $3 and $1,000 at $2.40.

One of Verry Elleegant’s main rivals on Saturday, Victoria Oaks winner Aristia has firmed from $11-$7 with bets of $2,000 at $14, $2,000 at $12, $1,000 at $10 and $1,000 at $8 to win today’s fillies classic.
