Barrier draws for Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan deliver a mixed bag for McEvoy

It was a mixed bag for champion jockey Kerrin McEvoy when barriers were drawn for the 2020 Group 1 double the Epsom and Metropolitan.

Kerrin McEvoy had mixed emotions post the Group 1 barrier draws for the Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan on Tuesday.

The champion big race rider partners up with the Jamie Richards-trained Probabeel in the $1 million Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Mugatoo from the Kris Lees yard in the $750,000 The Metropolitan.

Prior to the fields for the two spring features being declared, McEvoy’s two rides were the favourites for their respective races in all-in markets but after Probabeel drew barrier 18 the four-year-old mare lost top billing for the TAB.com.au’s Epsom Handicap to last year’s placegetter Star Of The Seas.

The pair swapped prices with Star Of The Seas firming from $7 into $6 courtesy of drawing barrier 2 while eased from $6 to $7.

“A bit of a wide gate but we’ll have to deal with that,” McEvoy said. “If we can have a bit of luck she’s going to run a great race.

“The Randwick mile suits, going out an extra furlong (200m) and looking forward to a good ride on the day.”

While the barrier gods were not helpful to Probabeel’s cause, they did no harm to the prospects of Mugatoo in The Metropolitan.

Barrier 7 was drawn for the imported Newcastle Cup winner and he was installed the $3.50 favourite with TAB.

“It looks pretty good,” McEvoy said. “I was happy with gate seven.

“He’s the class horse in the race and I’m looking forward to riding him there on Saturday.”
