SuperCoach expert trade grades for Round 15

Callum Mills is dividing opinion in the SuperCoach world – and our experts. Plus, what to do with Levi Ashcroft, Matt Flynn and the verdicts on who to trade in.

A rookie on the bye is the most traded-in player this week as SuperCoaches get close to competing their teams.

Our experts run the ruler over which popular targets people should bring in, and which are traps.

TRADED OUT

Henry Hustwaite ($375,300 MID)

Patch: SELL – I never wanted him anyway.

Al Paton: SELL – Couldn’t believe he was picked a week after I traded him when I could have offloaded Hugh Boxshall instead. A week later Boxshall is a chance for a recall and Hustwaite is miles off. Funny game, eh?

Tim Michell: SELL – Subbed out twice at halftime in his last two games and didn’t get a sniff against the Crows. Take the small profit and cash in.

Matt Forrest: MF: SELL – You still have him? Well done, I guess. I’d be surprised if he plays again for Hawthorn this year. JJ Liston Trophy shoo in.

Tarquin Oakley: SELL – Hustwaite has now been subbed off at half time in his last two AFL games and with a few Hawks set to return after the bye you can trade.

Luke Pedlar ($203,700 FWD)

Patch: SELL – It hurts but was always a risk.

AP: SELL – Still filthy he was subbed off after a decent first half last week, but his $53k price rise will help finish my team, so thanks, Luke.

TM: SELL – I’m not really sure why people paid $150k for him in the first place.

MF: SELL – He looked like a rookie saviour, but instead he was a trap.

TO: CONSIDER – Has only made 50k and if he holds his spot post-bye he could fill his boots against Richmond. But for those trying to finish their teams without many other options, trading is fine

Levi Ashcroft ($359,100 MID/FWD)

Patch: SELL – He’s bleeding cash and has to go, sadly. Thanks Levi, no doubt we’ll see you again.

AP: SELL – Stiff if you were holding out until Brisbane’s bye but he’s losing cash, which we can’t afford this year.

TM: SELL – He’s lost more than $30k in the last three weeks and has a break even of 100. This train has reached its destination.

MF” SELL – He’s been a trade out for a while, and he’s Break Even is 100 again and has the bye next week

TO: SELL – Undoing his good work if you continue to hold.

Elijah Hewett ($351,100 MID/FWD)

Patch: SELL – If you can hold him he’d be a perfect 24th player, and I’ve got no doubt we’ll be seeing him in our teams as a breakout contender in the next year or two, but it’s not a perfect world and we don’t have a lot of cash to turn him into a premo if you can.

AP: CONSIDER – A bad miss by me and still scoring well, but feels like a luxury to hang onto him for bench back-up. Might be handy cover for round 16, though.

TM: SELL – What a pick he’s turned out to be for those who were patient early on. It only costs about $100k to turn him into Sam Darcy before he kicks 14 goals against Richmond.

MF: HOLD – One of the few rookies making money at this point of the season. His bye hurts but this is not a busy week so you should have 20-plus pretty easily

TO: CONSIDER – Is playing some really good footy, but again we are trying to finish our teams so his $350k would be handy to reach another premium.

Campbell Gray ($173,500 DEF/FWD)

Patch: SELL – Well, this sucks.

AP: SELL – I would be surprised if we see him again this year.

TM: SELL – Out for at least the medium term and unlikely to get back in later in the year once Noah Balta’s curfew has ended.

MF: TRADE – His injured knee “didn’t respond well to (running) at all” according to the club, which stinks of him being done for the year

TO: SELL – The Tigers say his recent attempt to run didn’t go well, which isn’t a good sign for a return any time soon.

Sandy Brock ($270,900 DEF)

Patch: SELL – What a pick-up he’s been for those who went there, but the gravy train is at the station and it’s time to cash him in. Brock to McCarthy is an ideal trade this week.

AP: SELL – Can’t play him on field after the byes and we have good rookie cover in defence, so use his cash to improve your team.

TM: SELL – No idea how this bloke scored so many points but I guess that’s the beauty of playing in defence for a bad team. Well done if you got on.

MF: HOLD – Has the bye, a relatively high Break Even (48) and isn’t a huge-scoring player, but there’s so many worse rookies.

TO: SELL – A fantastic money maker a lot of coaches missed. Perfect time to sell ahead of his bye with $170k profit in the bank.

Matt Flynn ($383,200 RUC)

Patch: SELL – He’s got to go – goodness knows how much longer he stays in the side.

AP: SELL – The plan was always to flick him at the Eagles bye and we made it, but his three-round average is 75. I will long remember his final $700 price rise.

TM: SELL – Yeet him into the sun (figuratively, of course).

MF: SELL – Trade. He’s no good and is on the bye.

TO: SELL – Need to get rid of a player at that price who hasn’t gone over 80 in a month.

Angus Clarke ($195,300 DEF)

Patch: HOLD – Unless he’s the only one you can cut to get your upgrade, hold onto him I rekcon.

AP: CONSIDER – I have cut and run with the fast $81 profit. More cash to be made but it comes down to when, or if, you will need that money.

TM: CONSIDER – If he’s in the team you can squeeze one more week out of him before the bye. Cut ties then.

MF: HOLD – A poor game but there’s money to be made here. Essendon will keep giving him games.

TO: HOLD – Still has a low Break Even of just 15. A definite hold and then reassess when the Bombers hit the bye in round 16.

Clay Hall ($204,900 MID)

Patch: SELL: If he hasn’t got in the last few weeks I’m not sure he ever will.

AP: CONSIDER: If his money helps make a move, go for it, but could be decent bench cover for the run home.

TM: SELL – Won’t shock me if he’s in the 22 after the bye but he’s unlikely to make much money anyway.

MF: MF: CONSIDER – The sub vest hurt him, but seeing him at senior level was nice. The bye also comes at a grim time, he could push back into the 22 but maybe he drops out

TO: CONSIDER – Hall has no issues scoring when he is given game time, but whether he can crack the 22 after the bye is the big question.

Harry Boyd ($99,100 RUC)

Patch: HOLD – Don’t trade him to Nick Madden, it’s not worth it.

AP: HOLD – Not worth a trade to move him to Nick Madden, who might only last one more week in the GWS team.

TM: SELL – Honestly forget I had him at R3.

MF: HOLD – Only a trade out because of Nick Madden, but I’m not convinced he keeps out Kieran Briggs when he returns after the Giants’ bye

TO: HOLD – If this is to get Madden, I would keep that trade. You’d lose $20k to make that switch and then would need another trade to swap Madden out again down the track to use the profit made.

TRADED IN

Tom McCarthy ($99,100 DEF/MID)

Patch: CONSIDER – If you’re making trades and need a downgrade this week, go for him. If you’ve got enough trades to bring him in next week then I’d hold off.

AP: CONSIDER – An absolute must-have for round 16. Whether you make that move this week or next week (or already did it last week) is up to you.

TM: WAIT – Get Madden or one of the rookies playing this week. McCarthy can’t have 10 kick-ins during a bye round.

MF: WAIT – Not yet. But next week I’ll allow you to go early on him.

TO: BUY – Yes, he isn’t playing this week but if you’ve got a decent number of players to field then bringing in McCarthy to sit on your bench for a week won’t hurt. Will the alternative rookie make your best 18 anyway?

Callum Mills ($357,200 DEF)

Patch: CONSIDER – I’m not going there because he doesn’t suit my structure, but I’m concerned about his role and penchant to get injured at inconvenient times. I just don’t know.

AP: BUY – Not without risks (role, injury history) but he was one of the first picked in my side when the Team Picker opened for a reason.

TM: BUY – Smooth mover and reliable scorer if his body holds together for less than $360k.

MF: CONSIDER – Not for me, I don’t think. But he’s a cheap gamble to finish your side if you need someone around that price point.

TO: CONSIDER – Not as sold on Mills as some others.

Nicholas Madden ($119,900 RUC)

Patch: PASS – If he’d come four weeks ago I’d be all over him but unless you’ve both got enough trades to trade him in and then back out, and you believe he’ll be the No. 1 ruck then I’d be avoiding.

AP: PASS – There’s a world he keeps the ruck role ahead of Kieren Briggs and make a truckload of cash, but I’m not brave enough to back him in.

TM: BUY – He’s gone ahead of Keiren Briggs.

MF: PASS – Not for me. One game of cash making, then the bye, then Briggs is back. He’s been good but they won’t play two rucks

TO: AVOID – Briggs is likely to be fit for round 17 and despite Madden showing some promising signs, he could only have one price rise in him. Not worth the trade for me, but there are better SuperCoaches jumping on!

Jack Martin ($150,900 FWD)

Patch: PASS – It’s too late to make cash and I prefer someone coming in who’s a decent chance of playing the whole year – in this case, Sam Butler.

AP: CONSIDER – Injury history is atrocious, but the scoring role is there – 10 marks last week and 15 disposals at 93 per cent efficiency. And this is Geelong. Cats correspondent Dan Batten is bringing him in …

TM: CONSIDER – His calves are about as reliable as my trades but maybe the role suits him at half-back.

MF: CONSIDER – The injury history scares me, but Martin is playing wing/half-back for the Cats and has looked not terrible.

TO: CONSIDER – Injury history doesn’t bode well.

Sam Darcy is a popular trade-in this week. Picture: Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images.

Sam Darcy ($461,300 FWD)

Patch: BUY – Is coming in to my side.

AP: BUY – Will be super fun to barrack for.

TM: BUY – He’s going to kick minimum 12 goals this week.

MF: CONSIDER – A lot of talk about him kicking 10 goals against Richmond, but the Tigers’ defensive unit is the only decent area of the ground. They kept Jesse Hogan goalless just a month ago.

TO: BUY – Break Even is high but if you want Darcy you may as well get him before he plays Richmond.

Jason Horne-Francis ($491,900 MID/FWD)

Patch: BUY – I’ve got Darcy just ahead of him but not by much. You won’t be too disappointed with either.

AP: CONSIDER – I would take Darcy ahead of him this week but make him a top priority next week. If you’re in the bizarre position of needing two forwards and being able to afford both now then happy days … although that might only apply to me.

TM: BUY – Incredibly annoying he scored so well on his return and ruined all the plans to get him for $450k.

MF: WAIT – Not yet. He’s still going to come down a bit in price, but has had his bye and came back from his hamstring injury with a good score. Will be a cheap F6.

TO: CONSIDER – You’re safe to wait another week with a high Break Even, but doesn’t look like he will get much cheaper.

Harry Rowston ($119,900 MID)

Patch: CONSIDER – If you need a rookie not named Tom McCarthy he could be the guy.

AP: BUY – No. 2 at the Giants for CBAs last week. My No. 1 rookie target this week.

TM: PASS – Burned me once. Can’t go there again.

MF: CONSIDER – Tempted, but I remember James Leake. The sub vest into a tag doesn’t bode well for SuperCoach relevancy or job security, so I’d want to see where he’s named against Gold Coast

TO: BUY – Role was terrific against Brisbane and if he holds his spot after the bye a tasty match-up against the Eagles awaits.

Dion Prestia ($426,100 MID)

Patch: PASS – Absolutely not.

AP: PASS – Good God, no. Playing every game from here would be a huge achievement.

TM: PASS – Way too injury-prone.

MF: PASS – No.

TO: CONSIDER – If you’re up for a gamble, sure!

Dion Prestia isn’t getting much love from the experts. Picture: Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images.

Zak Johnson ($179,700 MID)

Patch: PASS – You’ve missed the boat.

AP: PASS – Too expensive now when you might only need him on field for one more week. Get Rowston instead and save $60k.

TM: PASS – Should have got on last week.

MF: BUY – I might be biased, but Johnson was my favourite player out of the draft last year. If he debuted in round 6 instead of round 12 he’d be a Rising Star favourite. He’ll still make $200k from here in the 4-6 weeks.

TO: BUY – Wouldn’t go here now he has already made $66k and only has one more game before a week off.

Sam Butler ($126,600 FWD)

Patch: CONSIDER – I’d be reasonably happy going this week, but if you can wait you should.

AP: WAIT – Pencil him for next week after Hawthorn’s bye.

TM: WAIT – Role is promising and the Hawks are winning with Butler in the team, but he has a bye this week.

MF: WAIT – Next week Butler is a BUY, but with the bye he’s a WAIT. Butler’s increasing his role inside the Hawks’ team, don’t see him as the next man out of the Hawks’ side.

TO: WAIT – Butler’s spot in Hawthorn’s team isn’t a sure thing with some players to come back.
