The power of this season’s grand finalists have been reflected in the 2025 The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year.

Surprise packet Woodville-West Torrens and perennial women’s powerhouse South Adelaide, who will meet in Sunday’s SANFLW grand final at Glenelg Oval, both have five representatives in this year’s all-star team.

Highly-respected Eagles mentor Narelle Smith has been named as coach after leading her club to the grand final for the first time.

A pioneer of women’s coaching, she remarkably steered the Eagles from seventh last season to minor premier, with a 12-2 win-loss record.

Woodville-West Torrens’ five team of the year players are Klaudia O’Neill (full forward), Imogen Trengove (half-forward flank), Christina Leuzzi (centre), Maia Freemantle (halfback flank) and Lucy Moore (interchange).

Leuzzi, who was rewarded for her incredible season by last month signing with the Crows’ AFLW team, was named captain of the elite side.

A natural-born leader, the 21-year-old averaged 22.8 disposals in 10 games in the minor round and was best on ground for South Australia in its state clash against Victoria.

O’Neill was the natural fit at full forward, with the 19-year-old leading the Eagles’ goalkicking charge with 24 in the minor round, including a bag of six goals in round seven against Glenelg.

Her young teammate, 16-year-old rising star Freemantle, captained the SA under-16 girls side this year.

Reigning premier South, which will contest a league-leading sixth grand final on Sunday, had its quintet of stars led by inspirational ruck Soriah Moon, who has been one of the most consistent players in the competition.

She had a standout home-and-away season, ranking second for hit-outs while averaging five tackles and seven clearances a game.

Tiffany King (centre half-back), Jaslynne Smith (back pocket, who this year became the first SANFLW player to reach the 100-game milestone), Taya Maxwell (interchange) and Emma Charlton (interchange) were the Panthers’ other team of the year representatives.

All eight clubs had players chosen in the 21-player side.

West Adelaide was the next-best represented club, with three players – star wing Zoe Venning, Lucy Waye (forward pocket) and Hannah Button (interchange) – while Sturt, Norwood and North Adelaide each had two players selected.

Rooster Laela Ebert, a rebounding defender, was rewarded for her incredible start to the season by signing with Melbourne’s AFLW team, while she was named best on ground in the SA state team’s clash against the WAFLW in May.

Central District (SANFLW leading goalkicker Katelyn Rosenzweig, 27 goals) and Glenelg (retiring star Jessica Bates) each had one player picked.

Rosenzweig is the SANFLW’s all-time leading goalkicker, with 121, and was named centre half-forward in the team of the year.

Bates was named vice-captain.

The side was selected based on performances during the 14-game minor round.

The selectors were SANFL female talent manager Robbie Neill, SANFL talent co-ordinator female programs Bek McMahon, SANFL competitions specialist – state leagues Daniel Joyce, SANFL football operations administrator Nick Bremner, SANFL media producer Zac Milbank and SANFL media and communications co-ordinator Alexandra Bull.
