VICTORIAN teenager Shaun O'Callaghan says the only way to defend his lead in the final three rounds of the Bowden Elite Teams Series is to attack.

Rather than sit safely in the bunch, the 19-year-old is desperate to land a stage victory on his way to clinching the title for Team Lightsview.

O'Callaghan, who is the SA road race champion, will wear the yellow jersey when the series resumes from its Christmas break at the Lightsview circuit on Sunday.

He leads the series on 200 points from SASI's Harry Carpenter on 188 and George Tansley on 184 with three criteriums remaining.

"Good offence is good defence," O'Callaghan said.

"I don't want to change my style of racing so I'll keep attacking and try to make it as hard as possible for everyone else."

O'Callaghan moved from Melbourne to Adelaide last year to study mechanical engineering.

He caught the eye of Team Lightsview during his first race in Adelaide around Whitmore Square in February.

The former junior teams pursuit national champion and Victorian under-17 road race champion said he was keen to add SA's elite teams series title to his resume.

"It's been a good season so far," he said.

"I haven't won a race but I've been consistent and placed highly."
