BERNARD Foley has declared that he and halves partner Nick Phipps have yet to peak as they get set for the Super Rugby finals.
The dynamic pair, who have been instrumental in NSW’s rise to the minor premiership, hold the key to the Tahs’ aspirations to win their first title. And Foley says their best is yet to come, starting against Queensland tomorrow in their last regular-season match.
“You never want to peak too early, you want to save the best for the last games coming up and we’re excited to have the Reds up there and leave an imprint and make some history,” Foley said.
“I haven’t won up there for NSW. This year was the first time I’d beaten the Reds, so it’s not something that comes around too often and we’re relishing the opportunity this weekend.”
Foley said the turning point for his partnership with Phipps — who he has played alongside at Colts, Shute Shield, Sevens, Super Rugby and Wallabies level — was the 39-30 comeback win against the Hurricanes in early May.
“The whole year, we haven’t peaked yet, we’ve been building,” Foley said.
“We played the Hurricanes and we fell behind. We were chasing 24-7, I think, and we didn’t panic or try to do anything different. We stayed true to what we knew and that really paid off for us and gave us a lot more belief.
“To take a scalp like them at that stage of the season was pretty massive.”
Foley then reflected on his partnership with Phipps:
“We sometimes play good cop, bad cop,” he said.
“He’s the one that revs everyone up and then I come in over the top with the easing, soothing voice.
“It’s always good to have him there. He is a typical No. 9, he’s got a lot of energy and his workrate around the field is obvious because he is everywhere.
“And his communication and ability to rev up blokes is pretty good, too.
“We’ve known each other for a while, and this year it has been good to play together at this level. We spent a couple of years apart.”
