FORMER Wallaby dynamo Chris Latham will step out as a club coach for the first time with Norths at the new Brisbane 7s at Ballymore on Friday night.
The fullback who thrilled a generation of fans with his try-scoring exploits for the Reds is eager to pass on skills, attitude and work ethic to a new breed.
Latham will be assistant coach of Norths’ Colts this season and set up an academy at the club’s Courtney Oval headquarters.
The assignment with dovetail neatly into his professional role as attack coach with Samoa at the Rugby World Cup later this year.
“I think some general core skills and the ability to play off-the-cuff are somewhat lacking in Australian rugby and there’s no better place to start than at Colts level,” Latham said.
“After a few discussions with Norths, I’m excited that we will get an academy started that can help bridge the gap for Colts wanting the next level of coaching to play top grades.”
The Brisbane 7s on Friday (5-11pm) and Saturday (3-11pm) will provide an early chance for Latham’s lads and the grassroots rugby community to enjoy a festive season launch.
Club sides will vie for a share of $100,000 in prizemoney with divisions for men (seven), women (four-to-six) and Colts (six) teams while juniors will play both days.
The bold venture will find an eager market with Brisbane missing such a tournament since the halcyon days of the Redcliffe Sevens in the 1990s.
“Brisbane hasn’t had something like this in sevens for a long time … it’s full-on fun and it will have the tribalism of the local rugby scene,” tournament director Sam Ryan said.
