Bledisloe Cup: Marika Koroibete opens up on family separation heartache

Separated from his family for 17 weeks, Wallabies winger Marika Koroibete didn’t get the chance to hug his son on his first birthday. He’s been making up for it this week.

Marika Koroibete is a proven performer on the big stage, but the Wallabies winger has vowed to take it up a notch in Saturday’s must-win Bledisloe Cup match, inspired by his family after four months of separation.

In the ANZ Stadium stands, cheering on the winger against the All Blacks, will be Koroibete’s wife Emma, and their two boys Iliesa and Isaiah.

Koroibete was shattered to miss Isaiah’s first birthday while in the Melbourne Rebels and Wallabies COVID-19 bubbles, and describes as “pure joy” the reunion he had with his family last week.

“I left them on July 2, it was challenging, it pushed a lot of responsibility to my wife every day, and she handled it really well,” Koroibete said.

“For me personally it was hard being away from home, you can’t do anything.

“But there are some sacrifices you have to make.

“One of the most difficult things was to miss out on Isaiah’s first birthday, that was a big achievement for him to turn one, I called him, the missus organised a mini-birthday party for him.

“We came back from New Zealand on Monday [October 19], I didn’t message them that we had left New Zealand, I wanted to surprise them.

“My son Iliesa opened the front door, they thought it must have been room service, and when I saw his face, it was pure joy.

“I have never seen him like that, so happy.

“He was happy I was back at home with them. Iliesa’s face, I can’t tell you what he was thinking at the time.

“And Isaiah, all the time it was [only seeing him] on video, and now he can see me again in person.

“After 17 weeks, it is surreal.”

Koroibete, the reigning John Eales medallist as Wallabies player of the year in 2019, will be a key to Australia levelling the series and forcing a decider in Brisbane next weekend.

A 16-all draw in Wellington was followed by a 27-7 defeat in Auckland a fortnight ago.

And now the Wallabies have lost senior playmakers James O’Connor and Matt To’omua to injury, forcing coach Dave Rennie to select one of the most inexperienced backlines in recent memory, including the debuts of five-eighth Noah Lolesio and inside centre Irae Simone.

“They’ve been playing together all year for the Brumbies and playing pretty consistent rugby, I know they will bring that up to international standard,” Koroibete said.

And when they create opportunities, Koroibete will be ready to finish, for his biggest supporters.

“It will be great to have my family at the ground, it will give me motivation and a big push to have my family there after a long time,” he said.

“I will do my best, and give that extra bit for them.”
