AUSTRALIA has lost a rematch of the Rio Olympics gold medal match, beaten 17-5 by New Zealand in the Dubai Sevens women’s final.
Portia Woodman scored New Zealand’s opening try and Rebekah Cordero-Tufuga struck in each half, while Emilee Cherry scored a consolation try for Australia.
Woodman took just two minutes to get her opener, racing 80m in a moment of redemption after being sin-binned in the Olympics decider.
“I’m so happy right now,” New Zealand captain Sarah Goss said.
“We’ve got a new team, new management and to beat Australia is great. To come back after the Olympics, it was tough, but to beat Australia in probably my favourite tournament, is so exhilarating for me.”
After losing the Rio final 24-17, New Zealand put a little extra into their celebrations, performing a haka after receiving their winners medals and the trophy.
Earlier, Australia routed France 42-0 in the quarter-finals and England 31-10 in the semis, while New Zealand made its way to the final with romping wins over South Africa (39-0) and Russia (24-5).
