Revealed: Why the Boomers have put a Quin Snyder consultant role on the backburner

The Boomers had decided on a coaching triple threat to usher in their new era – with high-profile NBA figure Quin Snyder a key piece in their puzzle. But those plans look set to be scuppered.

Snyder – who coaches Boomers defensive demon Dyson Daniels at the Hawks – was in talks to join the Australian national team in an advisory role.

The veteran NBA mentor was set to be on the ground with the team in the lead up to major tournaments like the World Cup and Olympics.

However, CODE Sports can reveal Snyder joining the Boomers in an official consultant capacity has been put aside.

New Australian coach Adam Caporn has reached out to the American NBA coach – and will continue to do so – but these talks will remain in the background for now.

It’s understood Caporn wants to organically create his own structure around a consultant job, but could revisit Snyder in an official role in the future.

It comes as the Boomers look set to unveil its strongest Asia Cup team for August’s tournament in Saudi Arabia.

CODE Sports understands leading NBL stars like Xavier Cooks, Matthew Dellavedova and Will Magnay are all in the mix.

There is also a push for Australia’s leading overseas based players, including Jack McVeigh (G League via Houston Rockets) and rising Indiana Pacers NBA star Johnny Furphy to suit up in the green and gold.

This would help the Boomers field its best ever Asia Cup side given the squad has been primarily made up of NBL players in the past.

Australia will aim to win consecutive Asia Cup titles when the tournament gets underway in Saudi Arabia from August 5-17.

The Boomers will battle the University of Colorado Buffaloes on the Gold Coast on July 31 in a bid to prepare for their Asia Cup defence.

It will be a unique opportunity for fans in Australia to catch NBA, NBL & NCAA stars on the same court as a curtain raiser before the Boomers charge at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup.

Caporn will be on the sidelines for his first ever campaign as Boomers coach with an invaluable look at the group.

“I couldn’t be more excited to return to Australia and get on the floor with the group,” Caporn said.

“I see the Asia Cup as a critical first step in building our system and re-establishing the Boomers’ culture.

“Representing Australia is an honour and a privilege, and our focus will always be on competing in a way that makes our country proud and gives us the best chance for success.

“A high-level NCAA program like Colorado will undoubtedly present a valuable challenge and an important early benchmark for us as we prepare for the Asia Cup. The energy, athleticism, and discipline of an elite college team will push us to pressure-test our system under game conditions. It’s a great opportunity to begin sharpening our identity against quality opposition.”

For the Buffaloes, the trip Down Under provides a unique development experience for a rebuilding group.

The Buffs were overpowered in a highly competitive Big 12 Conference in the 2024-25 NCAA season.

The Australian and USA college basketball exchange has exploded in the last decade, benchmarked in the 2024-25 season with a total of 232 Aussies enrolled across NCAA men’s and women’s programs.

Earlier this week it was announced that Nate Tomlinson, former Buff and Melbourne United guard turned coach will join Boyle as an assistant for the upcoming season.
