There is extra motivation for Reds scrumhalf Layne Morgan in this Saturday’s Super Rugby Women’s grand final against the Waratahs.

Morgan, a new recruit this year after she moved to the Gold Coast, was a five-year Waratah and a key cog in the outfit that snared last year’s title.

The Wallaroo halfback is excited at the prospect of taking on her former team and also a chance at creating history.

“I am excited for the experience of going up against a team I played with for five years,” Morgan said.

If the Reds win, it will be the Waratahs’ first loss to an Australian rival since the competition’s inception in 2018.

The Reds, runners up five times since 2018, are looking to re-write the history books on Saturday at North Sydney Oval (2.35pm).

“I want to be a part of the first Australian franchise that takes down the Waratahs,” she said.

“I definitely think these girls are the ones to do it.

“We’ve got so much talent throughout our team... There are too many to name.”

Morgan is referring to teen sensation Shalom Sauaso who she connected with three times last weekend on telling switch plays from the ruck base.

Sauaso made ground on two and scored a stunner on the third in an enthralling 54-40 semi-final victory over the Fijiana Drua.

“Let’s hope it works another three times,” Morgan smiled.

“They (Waratahs) would’ve checked their defence to make sure that they’re going to survive against us in that realm because no one wants Shalom running in an open hole.

“They will be looking to shut that down.”

She also made reference to her former Waratahs premiership-winning teammate Eva Karpani, a powerhouse prop who few have been able to contain across 80 minutes this season.

Morgan expects plenty of banter on the field and has already received a blunt call to arms from her old teammate, Wallaroo prop Bridie O’Gorman.

“She’s the one trying to stir the pot. She sent a message saying ‘Am I ready to lose on Saturday’.

“We will see.”
