Search interest in Piastri exceeded search interest in former F1 star and eight-time grand prix winner Ricciardo for the first time in Australia this year.

Google said search interest in Piastri was currently twice as high as the former fan favourite Ricciardo, who made an emotional farewell at last year’s Singapore Grand Prix.

But peak annual search interest in Piastri this year is about 30 per cent lower than the peak annual search interest in Ricciardo in Australia in 2022, according to Google.

Now in his third year in F1, Piastri has captured the sporting world’s attention with a stunning start to the 2025 season.

The 24-year-old won his third grand prix in a row at the last race in Miami to take his season tally to four wins from the opening six races.

He became the first McLaren driver since the flying Finn Mika Hakkinen in 1997-98 to win three consecutive grand prix.

After taking his win in Miami, Piastri has now extended his lead over teammate Lando Norris to 16 points in the championship standings.

Piastri’s stunning start to the year has fuelled hopes of the 24-year-old becoming Australia’s first Formula 1 world champion since Alan Jones 45 years ago.
