Top Aussie track sprinters Stephanie Morton and Matthew Glaetzer head for US training camp as they eye the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Australia’s top track sprinters Stephanie Morton and Matthew Glaetzer are in the US on training camp as they pass the one year to go milestone for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Aussie cycling — One year to Tokyo

Australia’s track sprinters have fled the Adelaide winter for the summer sun on a US training camp as the zero in on next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

The cycling team led by reigning team sprint world champion Stephanie Morton and former individual sprint world champion Matthew Glaetzer left for Boulder on the weekend after passing the ‘one year to go’ milestone for Tokyo last week.

Morton is on the comeback from knee surgery and said while progress was slow and steady, she was heading in the right direction.

“It’s three weeks post-op and dealing with a few niggles to get back to where I was but it’s all moving up,” she said.

“I’m getting pain-free training days now so it’s heading in the right direction, I’m getting stronger and fitter so looking forward to having no distractions and knuckling down to get that form back (in the US).

“It’s my third knee operation, the last one was 10 years ago so I had just been managing it, but with the training load in the gym it was the best time to do it before focusing on next year.

“It’s easy to panic and think you’re falling behind but it’s focusing on the little goals and I’m ahead of where I need to be.

“It’s (Olympics) definitely something to think about for motivation and on a day when things aren’t going as well you think how good it will be to be there (Tokyo) and represent your country.”

Both Morton and Glaetzer have spent time racing in Japan in recent years and have already had a look at the Olympic velodrome.

“I raced the girls keirin series and a couple of track parties with DJ’s and lights and they were on the track that will be used for the Games,” Morton said.

“I’ve done two-month stints (in Japan) at a time, Matty a bit longer, but it’s good because where the Olympics will be held is where we’re based and it’s such a beautiful part of the world we are looking forward to going back.”
