Lin Yu-Ting’s coach blasts critics as controversial boxer reaches gold medal match at Paris Olympics

Lin Yu-Ting turned on a masterclass to reach a gold medal fight, and her coach of 15 years hit back at critics saying the controversial boxer should be booted out of the Paris Olympics.

Chinese Taipei’s national coach has blasted suggestions his fighter Lin Yu-Ting should be kicked out of the Paris Games after progressing to the final to fight for the gold medal.

Just 24 hours after Algeria’s besieged Imane Khelif surged into the 66kg final, boxing’s other controversial competitor, Yu-Ting, will also fight for gold at Paris after a romp at Roland Garros.

Khelif and Yu-Ting were kicked out of last year’s world championships for allegedly failing sex tests — but the duo are now one win away from gold medals in the women’s competition.

Once again, Yu-Ting’s beaten rival protested.

Her Bulgarian quarter-final opponent paraded a sign saying: “I only want to play with XX women”.

This time, Turkey’s Esra Yildiz Kahraman, holding back tears, made an ‘X’ symbol as she exited the ring.

The International Boxing Association is adamant Khelif and Yu-Ting should be disqualified from the Paris Olympics and denied the chance to win gold.

Yu-Ting turned on a masterclass to trounce Kahraman, but her coach of 15 years, Tseng Tzu-Chiang, later hit back at critics saying the 28-year-old should be booted out.

“There is no problems,” Tseng Tzu-Chiang said.

“We are very happy.

“We have spent a lot of time training and we want to win a gold medal for the first time for Taiwan.

“I say respect the decision of the IOC, they make the decisions.”

This is a public-relations disaster for the IOC.

IOC president Thomas Bach has argued Khelif and Yu-Ting’s records suggest they aren’t that dominant but their performances so far in Paris have shown otherwise.

Once again, it was a unanimous 5-0 shutout with the judges who all scored the bout 30-27 in favour of Yu-Ting.

Kahraman was game but Yu-Ting carved up her Turkish rival and will start favourite in the final against Poland’s Julia Szeremeta on Sunday morning (AEST).

Breaking her silence after the fight, Yu-Ting did not address the biological firestorm, but revealed she carried illness into the semi-final.

“The cold will definitely affect me,” Yu-Ting said.

“I want to thank the doctors for giving me the greatest help so that my symptoms can be relieved quickly.”

Asked about winning gold, Yu-Ting said: “It’s been a while since I’ve been able to get this far.

“I hope I can achieve my goal.”

That scenario would be a gold-medal headache for the IOC and a sport in danger of being axed for the next Olympics.
