The New England Patriots still have some work to do to get worldwide acceptance of the familial Frenchy.

Pats coach Bill Belichick and star quarterback Tom Brady are famously unashamed about kissing their kids on the lips.

But new pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis became the object of Today host Karl Stefanovic’s derision after celebrating a 6.17m clearance in Poland on the weekend by finding his mother in the crowd and sharing a smooch.

Today played vision of the moment on Monday morning and Stefanovic couldn’t help himself.

Nine sports reporter Alex Cullen: The pole vault world record has been broken. Armand Duplantis notched 6.17m at an indoor event in Poland before planting one on his mother in celebration. There we go. Just crawling up there. Hey. A big hug and a big …

Karl: Whoa whoa easy easy. Geez he’s very close to his mum isn’t he. It’s quite the pash to celebrate, those pole vaulters do things differently don’t they. This is an age old debate, do you still kiss you mum and dad on the lips?

Panel: No

Alex: Tom Brady’s a very famous lip kisser, he kisses his dad and son on the lips

Co-host Allison Langdon: I think it’s fine

Karl: Let us know what you think, kissing on the lips, is it fine for your mum?

Allison: Of course, there is nothing wrong about that

Karl: It’s not my cup of tea. I can’t remember the last time I pashed mum

Allison: That wasn’t a pash, that was not a pash

Karl: You know what I’m saying, there might have been once at uni … I don’t know.

Duplantis, who was born in the US but represents Sweden, won silver at last year’s world championships in Doha. He cleared the bar on his second attempt in Torun on Sunday to break the previous record of 6.16m set by French vaulter Renaud Lavillenie in February 2014.

“It’s something that I wanted since I was three years old,” Duplantis told the website of World Athletics. “It’s a big year, but it’s a good way to start it.”

Duplantis had almost broken the record at a meeting in Dusseldorf on Tuesday. His performance marks him out as a clear favourite for the Olympic title in Tokyo this year.

Long considered the man most likely to push the event forward, Duplantis began breaking age group records aged seven.

He announced his prodigious talent to a wider audience when he won the European outdoor title in Berlin in 2018 with a vault of 6.05m, a world junior record.

Coached by his American father Greg — himself a former pole vaulter who cleared 5.80m — Duplantis was a product of a track and field-crazy family which had their own vaulting apparatus in the garden.
