‘He is winner to us’: Peter Bol’s family reflect on his recent Olympic efforts in Tokyo

Aussie track star Peter Bol has taken immediate revenge on one of his conquerors at the Tokyo Olympics with a big race win in Poland.

Bol, who stirred the nation on the way to the 800m final at the Tokyo Olympics and finished fourth, won the 2021 Memoriał Wiesława Maniaka 800m event in Szczecin, Poland overnight, clocking a time of 1:45.49.

He also won the race ahead of Polish star Patryk Dobek, who beat Bol for bronze in Tokyo.

“Decided to stay hungry post Tokyo. Win in Poland tonight,” Bol tweeted, showing off his trophy in a photograph.

Bol shot to prominence after winning his 800m semi-final heat in Tokyo before only narrowly missing out on an Olympic medal, leading for much of the race until he was pipped in the last 100m.

He broke his own Oceania record, which he set in the 800m heats in Tokyo, in the semi-finals and took that form to Poland.

Bol’s effort in Tokyo was the first time an Australian had made an Olympic 800m final since 1968.

His fourth-place finish was the best by an Australian male track runner since Darren Clark‘s fourth in the 400m in 1988.
