THE Australian women’s 4x100m relay team have won gold in the pool and set a world record to join fellow Aussie Mack Horton on what has become a golden night.
Cate and Bronte Campbell, Emma McKeon and Brittany Elmslie claimed the gold medal after edging out the US to set a world record time of 3.30.65.
Earlier, Mack Horton won Australia’s first gold medal at the Rio Olympics when he beat his main rival on the final lap of the men’s 400m freestyle.
Australia snared their first medal of the games with bronze in the men’s team archery. The Boomers, Opals, Kookaburras and women’s sevens have also won their opening matches.
