IF a gold medal wasn’t a fairytale finish for Kim Brennan, carrying the Australian flag at the closing ceremony of the Rio Games would surely be the ultimate last hurrah.
News Corp has learned that the two-time Olympian and Rio gold medal champion of rowing’s single sculls is the frontrunner to be given the honour of leading the Australian team out of the 2016 Games.
Securing gold with one of the most dominant performances of the Olympics, Brennan achieved her lifelong dream on the Lagoa rowing course while also claiming Australia’s only rowing gold medal.
A chair of the AOC’s athletes commission, Brennan is revered member of the Australian Olympic team, who optimised her passion for representing her country when speaking just moments after claiming gold.
“Australian’s are always incredibly proud to be Australian and to wear the green and gold,’’ Brennan said.
“But I just feel that this time around it’s even more special and I’m just so happy that I could pull it off.’’
After taking out the gold medal, the 31-year-old admitted she’s weighing up her future in the sport, indicating Rio is likely to be her final Olympics campaign.
AOC chef de mission Kitty Chiller refused to give too much away when approached by News Corp on who will lead Australia out of Rio.
Asked specifically if she had made the choice of flag bearer for the closing ceremony, Chiller said: “I’ve given consideration and will continue to consider until the very last event is over.’’
It’s understood that depending on the Australian basketball team the Boomers result’s over the next few days, Patty Mills or Andrew Bogut may also come into consideration.
The closing ceremony will be held on Monday morning (AEST) at the Maracana stadium.
