Brazil may have only finished ninth in the inaugural Olympic Games’ Rugby Sevens tournament, but Brazilian player Isadora Cerullo had a golden moment when her partner Marjorie Enya proposed to her after the final between Australia and New Zealand.

While most of the spotlight, and cameras, were on the winning side Australia and the other medal winners, Ms Enya found Cerullo on the field and asked her to marry her.

Ms Enya has been working as a volunteer at the event, and the pair have been living and breathing Rugby since Cerullo made the Olympic squad.

The Twitter-sphere went bezerk after the proposal, with fans from across the globe sending their congratulations.

OPINION: WEST VERSUS EAST - WAKING THE CHINESE DRAGON

Same sex marriage has been legal in Brazil since 2013, and many are claiming that this is the first marriage proposal at the Games.

In 2014, Cerullo reportedly was graduating from Columbia University in the USA and on her way to becoming a doctor.

Cerullo grew up in the USA, but when she got the call up to play Rugby Sevens for Brazil, which as the host country qualified automatically for the Games in Rio, she jumped at it.

Cerullo and her Brazilian teammates had mixed results at the tournament, beating Japan but falling to Great Britain and Canada in the round matches.

The local side defeated Colombia 24-0 and Japan 33-5 in the playoff finals to secure ninth place.
