Your say: Who is the best referee in the NRL?

PLAYERS, coaches, past players, journalists and even NRL boss Todd Greenberg have weighed in on the state of refereeing in rugby league. But what do you think? Who deserves to officiate at the NRL’s biggest matches? VOTE IN OUR POLL

Which NRL referee is the best?
Which NRL referee is the best?

WE’VE heard a lot about the state of refereeing in the NRL this season, no more so than in the past week after the clanger which robbed the Raiders of victory over the Sharks and any chance of making the finals.

Players, past players, coaches, commentators, journalists and even NRL boss Todd Greenberg himself have weighed in over the course of season 2018.

But what is public sentiment like on the issue of NRL refereeing? More specifically, who is the best NRL referee in the game right now?

We know who people don’t want to see officiating at matches but who deserves to get the nod instead?

If Daily Telegraph sports editor-at-large Phil Rothfield is to be believed, Matt Cecchin, a veteran referee of more than 250 NRL matches, is the man you want blowing the whistle.

“Cecchin seriously is the best referee this game has had since Bill Harrigan,” Rothfield said on the Monday Bunker yesterday.

“His treatment this year, to make him an assistant to Henry Perenara, is scandalous.”

The top referees in the game at the moment include Cecchin, Perenara, Grant Atkins, Gavin Badger, Ben Cummins, Ashley Klein, Gerard Sutton and Adam Gee.

Vote in our poll above to tell us who you think deserves to get the biggest blockbuster matches as the season heads towards the finals.
