Victor Radley given 10 in the sin bin twice as NRL ‘jumped the shark’

Fans and commentators couldn’t believe their eyes as an Origin hopeful was handed 10 minutes in the sin bin — twice.

The Brisbane Broncos have spoiled Joseph Suaalii’s debut for the Sydney Roosters with a 34-16 win at the SCG but the match has again been overshadowed by high shots.

Four players were sin binned including the Roosters’ Victor Radley twice in a controversial match where the crackdown overshadowed the result.

Radley, who was expected to make his Origin debut this season, will have a tense wait after the twin sin bins as well as twice being placed on report late in the match, all for contact to the head.

The Broncos scored early through Dale Copley in the eighth minute but the high shot crackdown is never too far away in the current game.

In the 12th minute, Victor Radley found himself in the sin bin after he hit Broncos half Albert Kelly as he put up a bomb.

Halfway through the second round of the crackdown, fans and commentators have called it the “jump the shark” moment.

The referee appeared to not have any issues from the incident but a minute later he was under investigation by the Bunker.

Radley did jump before the kick and the hit was deemed to be to “high and forceful” and saw Radley incredulous that it would be sin binned.

The commentators were blown away by the call.

“I’m staggered by that one,” Andrew Voss said.

“No, no – this is the concern in the flow of the game,” Corey Parker began. “We’re weeks away from the showpiece of our game in Origin. For mine, everything that Victor Radley did, I was singing his praises about the effort and the courage he shows. For him to get 10 minutes for that …

“I’ve got to say it how I see it and I love everything about what he did there.”

While some fans were divided, most were questioning how it could have been a sin bin, despite the harsh rulings being ingrained over the past two weeks.

The Broncos rubbed salt in the wound scoring straight away through David Mead, going ahead in a shock 10-0 lead.

But the controversy wasn’t over as Tevita Pangai Jr. took a hit up in the next set, backing into the line and staying down grabbing his neck.

Tevita Pangai Jr. got a penalty after appealing for a crusher tackle.

The penalty was then blown with the incident seeing Isaac Liu put on report with Pangai Jr. quickly getting to his feet.

“The fans are getting rather annoyed with the hand on the back of the neck from the ball carrier,” Voss said. “The moment that happens, the penalty is awarded. It’s almost as if we don’t worry about what led up to it. If the player gets up and grabs the back of his neck, penalty, and the fans are really starting to question that.”

The next incident came in the 42nd minute when Radley was again sin binned for a high shot, this time on Pangai Jr.

The Broncos were attacking the line and went down the short side with the Roosters lock putting a big hit on Pangai Jr.

The Bronco was slow to his feet but the referee didn’t stop the game until after the play had finished with the referee again giving Radley 10 in the bin.

Radley has become the third player sin binned twice in the same match in the last 20 years.
