Treymain Spry’s injuries and recovery plan after alleged assault

Gold Coast youngster Treymain Spry, who is fighting to save his NRL career after a brutal assault, has revealed just how close he came to losing his life.

This is the harrowing image that has left Titans young gun Treymain Spry fighting for his NRL career.

After more than a week in hospital, Spry is lucky to be alive after being the victim of an alleged coward punch in a vicious street assault in Brisbane last month.

The Queensland under-20s rookie suffered a fractured skull, a broken eye socket and bleeding on the brain following a sickening attack in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley entertainment precinct.

News Corp has obtained an image of the damage inflicted by Spry’s alleged assailant, a Brisbane rugby player who has since been charged with grievous bodily harm.

Queensland police have cleared Spry of any wrongdoing in the incident, which the Titans have reported to the NRL integrity unit.

The image shows Spry recovering in his hospital bed, giving the thumbs-up to his Gold Coast teammates while holding a personally-crafted message saying: “Go Titans!!!!”.

The left side of the 22-year-old’s face is visibly swollen, with damage to his eye and several stitches on his cheek following reconstructive surgery on his smashed cheekbone.

The Titans remain hopeful Spry will eventually return to rugby league but there are no guarantees.

It is understood Spry cannot operate a motor vehicle for another four months and he will undergo a battery of tests, including an examination of his brain, before he is given the green light by doctors to play again.

Titans veteran Kevin Proctor said Gold Coast players knew little detail surrounding the alleged assault, but hopes the shocking incident will not cut short Spry’s promising NRL career.

“The club have brought it up a little bit but to be honest we didn’t know too much about what happened,” Proctor said.

“They said he (Spry) was having a few dramas and we didn’t know the extent of it.

“We’ve found out now.

“Trey, if you are listening brother, we wish you a speedy recovery, hopefully you get well soon and we will see you around the club.”

Spry was hoping for a breakthrough NRL campaign this season after he scored two tries for the Titans in their 26-all trial draw with the Broncos last month.

But just two weeks after his eye-catching display, Spry was left fighting for his life after a night out with his new girlfriend ended in a cowardly and brutal assault on the 98kg centre or winger.

His alleged assailant, who now dates Spry’s ex-partner, is due to appear in a Brisbane court in May.

Sources have told News Corp Spry was walking through the Valley nightclub precinct with his partner and cousin when he crossed paths with his ex-girlfriend, who launched an unprovoked verbal attack on the Titans tyro.

It is understood Spry’s alleged assailant ran across the street and king-hit the Titans rookie from behind.

The coward punch knocked out Spry instantly. As he was falling to the ground, Spry’s cousin acted quickly, breaking his fall. Doctors have told Spry his cousin’s actions, which prevented his head hitting the concrete pavement, may have saved his life.

Spry is currently recovering at home and is said to be in a stable condition. However, his immediate playing future remains in doubt.

Rated one of the club’s most gifted players, Spry has had a chequered start to his NRL career. He made his Titans debut in 2020, playing five games, but was briefly released by the club last year on compassionate grounds.

It is believed Spry sought a break from the game to sort out some personal issues, but he returned to the Titans in pre-season in a bid to resurrect his NRL career.

The 187cm flyer impressed in the trials for the Titans, outperforming Broncos sensation Selwyn Cobbo in their derby trial at Robina, but the Ipswich product’s NRL future is now in limbo.
