‘Too fast for a school zone’: Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow chases down Josh Addo-Carr

The Dolphins’ Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has chased down the “fastest man on the planet” in a stunning moment that left the NRL in disbelief.

The Canterbury Bulldogs’ top four hopes are still alive after pulling off a 30-10 win over the Dolphins in Bundaberg.

But while the win draws the side level with the Sharks, who still have a game in hand, the big news out of the match was one of the greatest footraces the NRL has seen in some time.

Leading 6-0 after 22 minutes, Addo-Carr looked set to blow open the game, hitting full-flight after an offload went to ground with Bronson Xerri putting the winger on the outside.

After a stiff arm on the Dolphins’ Jamayne Isaako, Addo-Carr had only clean air ahead of him.

Still needing to go 80m, he got into full-flight and looked like he’d shut the door to give the Bulldogs a 12-0 lead.

But the chase was on with fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and centre Herbie Farnworth tearing off after Addo-Carr — although they were coming from the other side of the field and had plenty of ground to make up.

Addo-Carr has long had the tag of the “fastest man on the planet” any time he makes a break after now-Bulldogs supremo Phil Gould bestowed the tag on him on State of Origin Game 3 in 2020.

Addo-Carr also backed it up, setting a mind-bending 38.7km per hour when scoring a try in a match in 2022.

But two years later, it seems there’s a new “fastest man on the planet”, or at least the NRL, with Tabuai-Fidow tracking him down 10m out from the tryline with Fox League showing he even touched 40km/hr in his chase.

“One for the ages,” Fox League’s Andrew Voss screamed. “That is sensational.

“They talk about a match race on Grand Final day, well, you’ve just watched the preview. The Hammer chases down Addo-Carr.”

Corey Parker said it was “an absolute crazy tackle”.

Voss said: “There will be people in Bundaberg that will be able to say ‘I was there the day the Hammer ran down the Foxx. That is a great rugby league moment.”

Parker continued: “There's always a lot of talk about who is the quickest man in rugby league.”

He added that Dolphins assistant and next years’ head coach Kristian Wolff said he’d never seen Hamiso at full-speed “because he only runs as fast as he has to”.

At halftime, Addo-Carr admitted he thought he was home.

“But the Hammer is too quick,” he said to Fox League’s Jake Duke.

“He’s too quick. He’s got some speed on him.

“Unfortunately I didn’t get the result but I’m happy with our boys’ efforts.”

At the break, Cooper Cronk declared that Tabuai-Fidow was “crowned the fastest man in rugby league”.

The speed tracker on Fox League showed that Tabuai-Fidow hit 40km/hr at his speed.

Yvonne Sampson said: “Hamiso hitting 40 clicks an hour — that’s almost too fast for a school zone. That is fantastic work.”

“I need a car to go 40km/hr,” Cronk quipped.

Fans were equally blown away by the incredible scenes.

WWOS’ The Mole posted: “Wow … great chase Hammer on JAC.”

Sports reporter Lance Jenkinson commented: “What did we just witness?

“That Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow tackle on Josh Addo-Carr is up there with the best.

An absolute game changer.”

It’s Only Sport host Martin Devlin tweeted: “Hammer just ran down the Fox. That is some of the very best sport you’ll see this weekend. ANY weekend.”

One fan wrote: “I thought Josh Addo-Carr was the fastest man on the planet.”

Another quipped: “Josh Addo-Carr the fastest man the planet — not any more.”

But while the Dolphins won the chase, the Bulldogs were too strong, running away with the win with another classy performance.

While the Dolphins cut the lead to 16-10 at halftime after an intercept from Jake Averillo just before the break, the Bulldogs did enough, scoring a 49th minute penalty goal and two tries in two minutes to close out the game in what seemed like a comfortable win.

The Bulldogs jump back to fifth and will likely finish the round in that position, unless the Sharks lose by 45 points or more against the Knights on Sunday.

For the Dolphins, the loss sees them barely hanging on to the edge of the top eight with the Dragons, able to jump them with a win over the Titans on Sunday afternoon.
