Brittany Breayley-Nati to captain Gold Coast Titans NRLW side in inaugural season

It has been a long path to the top for Brittany Breayley-Nati, who started her rugby league career as a 17 year old at Mackay Magpies. But she will now lead an NRLW team in a historic season.

When she straps on her boots and leads her teammates onto McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday, Brittany Breayley-Nati will not just be representing the Gold Coast Titans.

She will be honouring her upbringing in Mackay.

The Titans’ inaugural NRLW captain said it was “surreal” to have the chance to lead an elite side in 2022.

“I was extremely humbled and lost for words,” she said.

“Being a little country girl from Mackay, and then moving to the big smoke to fulfil the dream of being in rugby league and getting to captain the first-ever Titans side is so honouring.

“I can’t wait to get out there and put the jersey on for the first time.”

Breayley-Nati said she started playing rugby league for Mackay Magpies in 2008 before moving to Ipswich and playing for Brothers.

“I have a rugby union background, my father and my two brothers and my sister all played rugby union so I was around that growing up,” she said.

“Then I started with Magpies in Mackay with Renee Kunst and Deanna Turner, and then in 2013 I made a trek down to Brisbane in hope of pulling on a Queensland jersey.”

The hooker made debuts for both Australia and Queensland in 2014, and was named the Representative Player of the Year at the QRL Major Competition Awards in 2017.

She was part of the 2017 women’s rugby league World Cup 23-16 victory against New Zealand, and scored a try in the tournament against Cook Islands.

In 2018, Breayley-Nati was named Female Player of the Year at the Dally M Awards, and she started at hooker in the Broncos’ 34-12 premiership win against Sydney.

Breayley-Nati said she was excited for the chance to play alongside her wife, Kimiora Breayley-Nati.

“I’ll be running out there alongside my wife, which is awesome,” she said

“The last time we played together was in 2019, so to be back out there with her, I can’t find the words to explain it.

“We’ve got two little ones at home who are aspiring to be like us, and hopefully all the sacrifices we’ve made during the season and a win at the end of the year will make it all worthwhile.”
