GOLD Coast cult figure Agnatius Paasi is fired up by his hurt at being cut by Warriors coach Andrew McFadden as he prepares to make his return to New Zealand.
Paasi will make his first appearance at Mt Smart Stadium since his only NRL game for the Warriors in 2014.
His two-year journey back to Auckland has been littered with ups and downs after he was cut by McFadden at the end of his debut season, only to find an opportunity under Neil Henry at the Titans.
Paasi moved to the Gold Coast on a “train and trial” offer, eventually securing a $50,000 contract last season which started his redemption story.
The 24-year-old was a star of this year’s Auckland Nines and is now a permanent fixture in the Titans first-grade side.
It took a leap of faith for “Tongan Torpedo” Paasi to realise his potential.
“I had a chat with Cappy (McFadden) at the end of the (2014) season,” Paasi said.
“(Bein cut) was pretty tough. It hurt a bit.
“I had been there for four years and nothing was changing. I was working part-time (as a carpenter) although I had made my debut.
“I had to learn about myself and what I had to do to become a professional league player. It was the best move to come over here and find out what it takes.’’
Paasi has thrived under Henry, alongside experienced forwards Luke Douglas, Greg Bird and Ryan James.
The Warriors clash is one he has been looking forward to.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t get injured last week so I could play this game,” Paasi said.
“It’s my first game in New Zealand (because) I was injured last year.
“This week’s game is a must-win for both teams. We’re both on the same points leading into a bye.’’
Rookie halfback Ashley Taylor will also miss the game with a groin problem and will be replaced by Cameron Cullen.
“It means a lot to me to follow Kayne and become the first brothers to play first grade for the Titans, and at the same age – it’s pretty special,” Lawton said.
“It was a surprise to get my debut, especially in the centres, but the boys are really good in making me feel comfortable and I’m really thankful Neil has shown faith, after having a late start to the season.”
