Tugun Seahawks Rugby League Club have thanked the medical staff at Runaway Bay for coming to the aid of two players hospitalised by a sickening head clash in reserve grade over the weekend.

Play was delayed by an hour as ambulances arrived to stabilise teenager Aaron Singh-Goesel and Zion Kamana for transport from the Betty Diamond Complex in Tugun.

Singh-Goesel, a Gold Coast Titans Laurie Daley Cup representative and 2024 Palm Beach Currumbin national schoolboy champion, was knocked unconscious for several minutes in harrowing scenes.

Kiwi centre Kamana departed covered in blood from a cut opened by the collision in the final tackle of the match.

Tugun A Grade coach Will Johnstone said both players would likely need longer than the mandatory 11-day concussion protocol stand-down and seek medical clearance before returning to play.

“It was a nasty head clash,” Johnstone said.

“Our blokes came in to make a tackle, have turned around and hit their heads together.

“One of them (Singh-Goesel) got knocked out badly, he was unconscious for a long time.

“The other (Kamana) had a really bad facial injury. There was a lot of blood; it was a nasty one.

“We had to leave them on the field and wait for two separate ambulances to come and take them away.”

The players were released from hospital on Saturday evening and Johnstone said both had indicated they were fine when he checked in.

“They’re okay, but they will have to stand down. They’ll need to have no symptoms and I’m sure they’ll see a doctor before they are cleared to play.”

Johnstone said on behalf of his club he wished to thank Runaway Bay’s support staff for their support following the incident.

Before the ambulances around Runaway Bay first aid officer Michala Higgins and trainers Paul Kuhnemann and Christian Serne attended one player while Tugun’s medical staff supported the other.

“We owe a big thanks to their support crew. With two guys down, they were really supportive and it shows what footy is about at this level,” Johnstone said.

“They did everything they could to make sure the players were okay even though they weren’t from their club. It was awesome what they did.”

Tugun’s main field has no lighting because of its proximity to the runway at Gold Coast Airport.

The A Grade fixture was reduced to 30 minute halves with no stoppage time and a shortened, five-minute halftime break, to allow the game to conclude before darkness fell.

Tugun won 34-12 in the shortened A Grade match and 24-14 in the reserves match.
