MITCHELL Moses can remind Wests Tigers fans this weekend why the club got it right sticking by him and not rival five-eighth Te Maire Martin.

This would have been a legitimate debate 12 months ago for the Tigers faithful, especially when Martin made an instant impact in the NRL for new club Penrith.

Martin was the starting No.6 and Moses the halfback in the Tigers’ Holden Cup team in 2014.

Given the Tigers were heavily invested in Moses and halfback Luke Brooks, Martin was forced to try his luck at the foot of the mountains. He would have been playing reserve grade if still at the joint venture.

Moses was wonderful in last Friday night’s season opener for the Tigers while Martin showed glimpses of class in his return from injury for the Panthers.

Both playmakers will go a long way to deciding Sunday’s result at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

“Te is a class player who can pull something out of nothing and directs the boys around really well,’’ Moses said. “We’ll have to watch him and be on our toes.

“We played 20s together, he was the six and I was the seven. We had a good combination, he was always the off-the-cuff player, and I had to calm things down a bit.

“He was so quick with the ball and on his feet. He has a good kicking game, just a good all-round game, so we’ll have to see if we can pressure him.’’

Given Martin departed to strike up a halves combination with Nathan Cleary, Tigers officials will be hoping Moses hangs around for the long haul.

There is growing hope the club will retain their big four in Moses, Brooks, James Tedesco and Aaron Woods.

Moses went into last Friday’s opener with a foot injury, and while restricted at training earlier this week, is a definite starter for the rare Channel 9 Sunday afternoon game at Campbelltown.

Martin and teammate Bryce Cartwright leaked plenty of points against the Dragons, and will have their work cut out trying to stop fullback Tedesco who likes to attack down their side of the field.
