Maguire rips into Tigers after loss

Josh Reynolds is a former State of Origin star playing for Western Suburbs in NSW Cup but he’s finally ready to make his much-anticipated NRL comeback.

Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall is in doubt for Friday night’s big match against Penrith with a hamstring injury he sustained in Sunday’s loss to Canterbury.

Marshall didn’t finish the game and he will have scans on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

If ruled out, Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire has the luxury of going straight to Reynolds, who played for Wests in a curtain raiser at Campbelltown.

“We will have to have a look at that (injury), we’ll see how he goes,” Maguire said. “It was fairly tight toward the end. I just spoke to him then and he said he’s not quite sure.

“Part of what makes a good club is having good players there waiting and full credit to Josh.

“I know if he gets an opportunity this week he will be ready to go. He has been performing well in reserve grade.”

Wests Tigers were disappointing on Sunday. Their completion rates were low — dropping to 70 per cent in the first half — and several players pushed unnecessary passes in traffic.

“It wasn’t the way we planned to play but credit to the Bulldogs,” Maguire said.

“It is disappointing but it is a kick in the backside for us about what’s required to play at the highest level in this comp.

“That is why teams stay at the top, they do it consistently. If we want to be a team that finishes up the ladder at the pointy end, you have to be consistent.

“Good teams consistently find ways to win.

“You find out about yourself and the character of each of us when you go through these things. You have to turn up every game in this competition, it’s as simple as that.

“The Bulldogs played well today. They had everything to play for.

“Defensively they came at us harder than we went at them. They won that little battle.”
