Melbourne Storm will be the first football code back playing in Victoria with confirmation the first two matches of the revamped NRL season will be at AAMI Park.

As reported by the Herald Sun last week, Storm’s two games against Canberra on Saturday May 30, and then South Sydney on Friday June 5 will both be played in Melbourne.

Storm had received permission from the state government to play games at home, having been training at AAMI Park since last Wednesday.

The NRL has announced the venues for rounds three and four of the competition, with Brisbane and North Queensland also expected to play at home.

Bookmakers have installed Storm, which won its opening two games before the season was suspended, both on the road, as premiership favourites.

The NRL will get a two-week head start on the AFL, which won’t resume until June 11.

Storm chief executive Dave Donaghy said the clear window could help the Melbourne club wanted to win some more rusted-on fans going forward.

“While we’re the only show in town, I think it presents us with a window of opportunity, that’s for sure,” he said.

“We’ve got the largest social media audience of any sports team in Melbourne, so we know we’ve got a large fan base but clearly given the conversion of membership a lot of that fan base is passive.

Hopefully it provides us a great opportunity to connect and, over time, convert some fans into memberships.”
