Watching Xavier Va’a score the fastest ever debut NRL try surprised Scott Cowan.
However, watching the 21-year-old run out for Sydney Roosters came as no shock.
“I’m not surprised to see him making his NRL debut,” Cowan, who coached Va’a at St Mary’s College Toowoomba, said.
“Even at a young age his work ethic, his commitment, his passion it was second to done.
“Talent only carries you so far, work ethic is what gets you to the next level and helps you develop.
“Xavier was always talented and dedicated.
“It’s great to see that effort rewarded and seeing all his family in the stands for his debut – absolutely amazing for him and them.”
Cowan also believes Va’a has a number of other traits that will help him succeed in one of Australian sports toughest arenas.
The hulking front rower is physically suited to the NsRL.
At 15 years old he tipped the scales at 115kg and alongside his younger brother De La Salle, who debuted for the Roosters last season, was one of Australia’s most promising boxers.
It is his mental traits however that will lead to his success according to Cowan.
“In 2021 he was our school leader and league captain,” Cowan said.
“We talk about the importance of brotherhood at St Mary’s, Xavier always set a high standard for himself and others but at the same time he was always the first to step in and talk to other players to help and support them.
“He’s just a great person humble, hard working and passionate.
“Being the older brother, watching De La Salle make his debut for the Roosters last season that might have tested his resilience.
“He never wavered though. He supported his younger brother the whole way, was proud of his achievements, because that is who Xavier is.
“And he’s always had faith, faith in God’s plan for him. He spoke about that after the game, knowing God had a plan for him if he kept working hard.”
