Souths recruit Latrell Mitchell wants to get more involved in Bunnies attack despite tough night out

There were errors on Thursday night, four to be precise, but don’t expect Latrell Mitchell stop trying to become a more dangerous attacking weapon for Souths coach Wayne Bennett.

South Sydney recruit Latrell Mitchell will continue his push to become more involved in the Rabbitohs attack, despite suffering a run of errors in their 20-12 loss to Penrith in Thursday Night Football.

Only seven games into his new life as a No.1, Mitchell made four handling errors and was also sin binned in a Sydney showdown where gutsy Panthers No.7 Nathan Cleary proved the undeniable star.

As expected, the performance drew out the usual social media critics despite Mitchell coming off the back of three outstanding weeks against Melbourne, Gold Coast and Warriors.

In attack against Penrith, the 23-year-old also ran for triple figures for the second consecutive week – the first time he has done so all year — as he looks to become a more dangerous attacking weapon for Souths coach Wayne Bennett.

Elsewhere, the Taree product also came into Round 7 boasting seven try assists, which among fullbacks sees him ranked first with Manly Sea Eagles star Tom Trbojevic.

Notably, Trbojevic has also made four errors in a game in 2020, as has Canberra Raiders star Jack Wighton.

While it has been only a week since Mitchell was captured crying on the field by Fox Sports cameras, those close to the Bunnies poster boy insist the issue had nothing to do with his off night against the Panthers.

While it was later revealed the fullback has struggled being away from family during the COVID-19 lockdowns, there has been no request from the player, or his management, to take any type of leave.

Elsewhere, the Fox Sports Lab also revealed the Indigenous All Star is also making improvements to his running game after finishing under 100m for each of the opening five rounds.

Currently, Mitchell averages 81m per game – which is the fewest of any NRL fullback who has played more than one game this year.

The next in the category is North Queenslander Valentine Holmes, with 96m.

At the opposite end of the scale, Roosters No.1 James Tedesco is averaging 217m per game, with Warriors poster boy Roger Tuivasa-Sheck second with 180m.

Three players then sit in third, with Parramatta skipper Clint Gutherson, Canberra fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Wests Tigers import Adam Doueihi all earning 178m weekly.

There is no doubt Mitchell is still building his partnership with Bunnies No.6 Cody Walker, who was sidelined for two weeks after failing to inform the NRL Integrity Unit of an off-field incident late last year.

While the pair have shown glimpses in recent weeks, more time is required before they reach the type of form that has coach Bennett convinced he can win a premiership with this team.
